Man, there are so many of these that you guys are mentioning that I totally agree with, haha!
greeneyed_one, "Put on a Happy Face" was one of mine as well.
Same with "Matchmaker", NathanLaneStalker.
And I had no idea about those Christmas songs!
And also, Act4ever, I actually just realized that "We're In the Money" isn't originally from 42nd street...I think it's only in the revival. But still. Awesomeness.
"Cages or wings, which do you prefer?"-- Tick, Tick...BOOM!
Was "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" really written for Meet Me in St. Louis? Or was it already a song before Meet Me In St. Louis, and they just included it in the show?
If it was written for it, then add that song to the list for me of unexpected showtunes!

Don't know if this counts, but for the longest time I was only familiar with the Beatles' version of 'Til There Was You'. It wasn't until MANY YEARS LATER that I realized that song was from The Music Man.
"It does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are 20 gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg."
-- Thomas Jefferson
Yup, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" was introduced by Judy in MMISL.
While we're on the subject of Judy (er... weren't we?), when I was maybe five years old, I heard her sing "You'll Never Walk Alone" for the first time and it instantly became my favourite song. I was absolutely obsessed with it. It may have kickstarted my Judy obsession, who knows. Anyway, three years later my mother takes me to a performance of "Carousel" and I nearly jumped out of my seat when they performed the song. I was very excitable. And I kept saying, "How funny, that they would include a Judy Garland song like that," until my mother set me straight.
I grew up in the 60's & was a big Doors fan. I really liked their song "Moon of Alabama" (Oh, show me the way to the next whiskey bar...)It wasn't until a few years later that I discovered it was a Kurt Weill song from one of his musicals (Either Happy End or The Rise & Fall of the City of Mahoganny)
I'm sure there are tons, but the only one I can think of is "Heaven Help my Heart" from Chess -- I had always heard the song, but never knew it was from Chess!
It's already been mentioned, but I honestly had NO idea that "Aquarius" was from Hair.
I'm curious about "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," too. I thought it was written for Meet Me in St. Louis, but I'm not sure.

Remember those Gap commercials that used those West Side Story songs? Yeah, I had no idea they were from a musical. The first time I saw the movie, (when I was about 11, I believe) I was all excited because I knew some of the songs :P
I didn't know Seasons of Love was from Rent. We warmed up to it in dance class one day, and I went up to my teacher and was like, "Who sings that?" And he told me it was from the Broadway show Rent, and that's how I became hooked on Broadway!
"I Only Have Eyes For You" is not from 42ND STREET it was added into the revival.
"Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was written for the film of MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS it was not a popular song before.
EDIT - PS: This thread scares me a little for some reason.

"DeLovely" "All that Jazz" yeah my parents had me listening to little old showtune tapes when i was younger, so i pretty much knew which songs were from shows or not...
I didn't know that "Send in the Clowns" was from a Broadway show. I didn't even have an idea WHAT it was from. It was just... weird.
I was surprised to find out that "Almost Paradise," "Let's Hear It For The Boy", and "Holding Out For A Hero" were all songs from the Footloose movie before they got big. Then they went onstage.
Bushel and a Peck. My dad used to sing it to me when i was very, very little and I always wondered why nobody else knew it. I thought my dad was cooler and had a greater knowledge of kids bedtime songs than theirs did. Then, last year, my director announced we'd be doing Guys and Dolls the following year and how cute would it be to have such and such costume for Bushel and a Peck. I was thinking, "Ummmm? That's a Broadway song? I call myself a theater geek and I had no idea!"
I didn't know Aquarius or I'l Never Fall in Love either.
Megan Mullally as Karen Walker on Will and Grace: "Tell me more. Tell me more. Like does he have a car?"
i had no idea that defying dravity was from wicked. OMG

Wasn't Barrett Foa in those ads?
I had no idea that "Everything's Coming Up Roses" was from Gypsy. I sang it for a school event when I was 11 at the urging of my drama teacher and two years later, realized that it was from a musical. Go me.
