Can't find the original thread...
It hasn't gone anywhere from where it started yet, and already THE DROWSY CHAPERONE and it's "Sutton-Can-Do-No-Wrong-Why-Isn't-She-in-Wicked" fans are getting on my nerves.
(That said, I hope it is a success and comes to Broadway. Maybe I'll change my mind.)
Hugh Jackman is overrated (the Oprah as Tony host thread sparked this thought).
Agreeing with Sweeneyfan...I don't get Sutton's appeal. That said, I love Melissa Errico and a lot of people don't. To each their own.

Just goes to show that some unpopular opinions are wrong. Anyone who saw THE BOY FROM OZ can tell you what an amazing performer he is, there was no show without him. Also, we DON'T want Oprah to sing--she's worse than Rosie O'Donnell, almost as bad as Roseanne.

i don't know how unpopular this is...but rosie o'donnell never ever ever should have been in grease. period.
I'm not a fan of Stephen Adly Guirguis' plays.
Aretha Franklin performing with Hugh Jackman last year at the Tony's was God awful.

That isn't an unpopular opinion.

Danielm, just goes to show that some people can't respect a differing opinion. No, I did not see him in The Boy from Oz, but I was speaking solely on his ability as Tony host and singer/actor in other things that I have seen him in. His singing voice does not impress me and I find him, for lack of a better word, boring as Tony host.

i actually did see him in the boy from oz. yay hugh can hit a middle C. yay hugh is pretty. yay he can move and work a crowd. but it was by no means the work of brilliance everyone claimed it was. it was sloppy broad acting, and it didn't capture me at all.
let the bashing begin.
I was vomiting so much from listening to Boy From Oz soundtrack I couldn't even bring myself to pass the theater where it was playing let alone see it. I thought Hugh was a great host the first time he did it, but after that it grew stale.
Billing for "The Color Purple" should read "Alice Walker's The Color Purple" if any name is necessary, but definitely NOT "Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple".
I know, its a marketing thing, but it's WRONG.

It sounds like you need medical attention, that kind of vomiting is probably a serious issue.
I agree that the Aretha Franklin duet was bad and a really bad idea. But Hugh Jackman is still a great performer--better live than on video or recording.

Doesn't the billing say Oprah Winfrey PRESENTS's the Color Purple?
I have zero interest in seeing "Brokeback Mountain".

It is Oprah presents...
Furthermore, it isn't wrong. Walker is getting credit - have you not seen the huge screens outside the theatre?
But, honestly, Oprah is presenting it...And it sells tickets.
Sondheim is no god...a genious? Yes, but NOT A GOD.
Phantom of the Opera is outdated and needs to close. It is nothing but a big spectacle.

hey i'm glad this thread was started up again. The old one was so long that i didn't have the patience to read everyone's coment. With that said, I hate Idina Menzel's voice, it grating and unbearable. The same thing goes for sarah brightman and andrea bocelli (sp?) I think rent is stupid. It rips off the story of la boheme and it's pretentious. I think the music to wicked it horrible as well. I have no idea what people see in those sort of musicals besides the glamour and pretty effects.
I didn't mean on Playbill or signs outside the theater. WHAT I MEANT was that when people refer to the show, The Color Purple, if they have to say a name, they should give credit to Alice Walker, not Oprah! Some examples:
"Oprah Winfrey's "The Color Purple" Debuts at NYC's Broadway Theatre" (blacknews.com)
"Oprah Winfrey's "The Color Purple" Debuts on Broadway" (IMdiversity.com)
"With Oprah Winfrey's "The Color Purple" opening..... " (washingtonpost.com)
"On Thursday, LaChanze begins her lead role as Celie in Oprah Winfrey's "The Color Purple," on Broadway." (www.philly.com)
"Patti LaBelle and Jill Scott are dueting on a James Poyser-produced take on "What About Love?" from Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple musical that opens on Broadway tonight."(citypaper.net)
"But today is also the day when Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple opens on Broadway". (http://www.keithboykin.com/)
"We have yet to see how Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple will be received." (www.theaterscene.net)
"Last year you loved ICP's Spamalot party and now we offer you Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple." (icp.org)
Geesh--I guess it really WAS an unpopular opinion lol.

good point, yankeegal! and, adding to your list if you dont already have it, on the new TCP cd cover ( i saw a pic), it says "oprah winfrey presents THE COLOR PURPLE a new musical bla bla bla" (minus the bla bla bla but you get my point :) )
and sorry, but being formerly apart of 2 sutton fan message boards, I have to say sutton is not overrated and is very very talented, so yeah
- i don't think any of the following people sing that well (some are a hold over from the old thread)
ethel merman
liza menelli
idina menzel
sherie renee scott
bernadette peters
- adam pascal was lackluster vocally in the rent movie (when light my candle is your best roger number thats not a good sign), this only pertains to the movie however not as a general thing
- jesse l. martin deserves an oscar
-i enjoy wicked's music but i find the set (save the oz head and munchkinland) to be awful
- dirty rotten scoundrels deserved best score and best musical
- spelling bee isn't as good as its cracked up to be

the recent revival of Two Gentlemen of Verona in Central Park was the best thing I've seen all year.
the best flop in recent memory is Lennon.
