I have read in multiple places that Cry-Baby may or may not have been recorded (conflicting message board posts, other websites). And I know Lestat was never released. Do we know which companies actually actually recorded these?

That's sucks. Some sites say that Cry-Baby wasn't released per the cast and that Lestat wasn't because of Elton John.
And that Mame recording sounds really interesting too

CRY BABY was NOT recorded, or at least has not been yet. It may happen still but nothing official as of yet.
TER/JAY has many more in their masterworks series (inclusing ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) that are awaiting final mixing but producer John Yap is holding off because the market is very soft right now.
I just got through a download a 1953 Columbia studio cast album of Noel Coward's BITTER SWEET that was never issued as the composer was not happy with the results.
There have always been albums recorded but not released for many reasons, but CRY BABY is not one of them.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 8/7/08 at 7:57pmI hate that the Lestat recording still hasn't been released. I know that it was horrible but there was so much talent in that cast and some gems of songs. The Elton John demo and other *recordings* are just not cutting it for me.

Wasn't the Broadway cast of Carrie recorded in 1988 by RCA Victor but wasn't released?

Angel like Ari was a studio cast album. Never released and I have both.

There are a lot of cast recordings that were announced, often times with record labels attached to record them that never happened. It's common to look at a poster for a show that flopped or closed out of town and to see a mention of a "upcoming cast recording" on a certain label.
That is definitely the case with CARRIE which was never recorded. I know this 100 percent because I asked one of the authors when I saw the great Los Angeles production last year.
Most of the time when a cast recording is recorded and not released some bootleg version of it eventually makes it out. If the story is true about Ginger Rogers recording MAME, i'm surprised nothing has ever surfaced from that recording. Are we sure that's not just a legend?

Oh Sir Elton knows why he will not let it be released.

CARRIE was definitely not recorded sadly. There is an extremely good soundboard of the full show circulating however that has been edited by many into a mock cast album. And I did once create a cover for a fictional RCA release.

Lestat was recorded but never mixed, edited or even completed, according to what I've read. The band recorded, most of the leads recorded but backing vocals, overdubs and mixing were never completed.

RCA was to do Gantry . Never did as show opened and closed opening night. In Not Since Carrie there is a picture of the album as someone found the actual covers in a NJ warehouse.

Off Broadway's Once Around The Sun was recorded but never released. It had a few nice songs.

Now that "Gantry" has been mentioned I'd like to ask a question in regards to the show's book. I was looking at a list of the characters in the show and I did not see the character of prostitute "LuLu Baines" (Shirley Jones won an Oscar for the role in the film) listed.
Did they do away with that particular story line in the musical?
It seems odd that they would. It's one of the more famous ones from the original novel and of course, the Richard Brooks film.
Has the script ever been published? What was the score like?

I've heard from a few different sources that Welcome to the Club was recorded.
I have never been able to track down any type of confirmation other than a photo of the album cover.

Lulu was not in Gantry
I have an 8 song demo and about 5 made it into the show. It did not matter as it opened and closed at the same time. From what I recall, it was not bad. There is a filmed number from the Ed Sullivan show floating around somewhere. I think it's quick closure was the critics were pissed off over a supposed slight directed at them by the producers and they took it out on the show which was not a shock. After that, the theater was demolished.I like that had it been a hit they supposedly had a box office sign "All souled out"
I read Elmer Gantry and it was interesting that the movie only covered about 1/3 of the novel. Would love to see some of the other Elmer Gantry musicals make it to Broadway.

What slight did the producers bring about on the critics?
I am going to have to pick up a copy of "Not Since Carrie" and re-read it. It's been ages since I first read it and I don't remember a lot from it.
LOL @ that "All Souled Out" sign. Sounds really, really cheesy.
Thank you Mr. Roxy, your responses are always appreciated.
