I know this has probably been done a million times. But now since we're familiar with Sherie's Ursula, I felt like hearing opinions.
What if the Ursula in the current production was styled JUST like the movie's Ursula? From hair/makeup to costume?
Who would you have cast? I say Debra Monk would be the closest we would get to a live version of Pat Carroll's movie Ursula.
What do you think? Remember I'm not talking about Sherie's styled Ursula. Cast it as if she were the movie Ursula.

Jesus. What an insult to Ms. Monk.
(I'm just kidding, but kind of not kidding.)
LOL I guess it could be insulting. I love Debra, and think she'd be perfect. I can definitely hear her singing POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULS similar to Pat. Updated On: 1/14/08 at 01:57 AM
I love her too, but to put that picture out and say, DEBRA MONK! is just sort of not very complimentary, if you know what I mean.

LOL, of course. But I used the picture to remind everyone of her costume, hair, make-up. I never said it looked like Monk.
Skinner would have kicked major ass.
Divine!!!!!!! ( i know, he's dead, but that would have really brought the whole thing full circle)
Mary Testa would have been the best option for Ursula, along with Monk (who perhaps would have brought a more grotesque sexiness to the role than Testa). After listening to the cast recording I don't find Sherie menacing enough, she rocks the number but I miss a scary, grotesque Ursula. Oh well.
Oh man. ROAR! Mary Testa! I love that E-EVIL WOMAN. She would have kicked.
I agree, I wonder if she would consider (or be considered) to replace Scott. Or she should just release a solo album and include "Poor Unfortunate Souls" (why is there no Testa solo album????).
Sara Ramirez is another actress that would have been ideal for the role.
Ramirez will never come back to Broadway.
I know this may sound weird, but I would love Eartha Kitt.
Why not, Foster?
What's her aversion?
Or is it just that she's hit it big with Grey's, no one really knows she was ever there, so she'll never come back?
She has an 8-year contract with a TV show, where she is making millions of dollars.
Her attendance record during SPAMALOT was deplorable.
It's just not worth it for her money-wise or commitment-wise, or for any producer to have to put up with her nonsense.
I think she makes an important point in this interview regarding Broadway:
I’d grown disillusioned with the theater scene. I’m 5'9", and people didn’t know where to put me, a tall Latin woman. They were like, “Well, you can sing really good and you can act okay, but you’re not black and you’re not white. We just don’t know who to cast you as.”
I still find it fun to imagine what she would have been like as Ursula.
i vote....

From now on, I suggest that all Broadway producers should post the names of actors they are considering for an upcoming production on Broadway World.com. Then it would be the duty of the regulars here to cast the show.
I cannot understand why some here think an actor would want to play a role like another actor played it. Please explain.
Please explain why Debra Monk would want to leave Curtains to appear in Little Mermaid.
Was Emily Skinner ever considered for Ursula?
In the acting world I guess so. Lots of stars are smaller than you think.
Sara Ramirez missed performances because she had throat problems. She was out on doctor's orders. It is not like you have a choice if the doctor says.. You cannot go on or you will ruin your voice.
Geez! It amazes me that people don't understand that it is not like breathing. Singing is a lot harder then people think and you can do serious damage to yourself if you do not take care of it.

Wannabefoster and Glorydays: I could not agree MORE that Emily Skinner would have pwned this role. As much as I love Sherie, I honestly think this was Emily's part. On Emily's behalf, I'm just a little bitter about it as well.
ADirector: YES, Emily was considered for this role and at least workshopped it out of town, if I'm not mistaken. She wanted that part and did this unbelievable rendition of Poor Unfortunate Souls on her Skinner/Ripley: Raw At Town Hall CD. Just a phenomenal performance.

Sounds like she was singing wrong... trained people do it 8 shows a week for years without doctor's appointments...
