Vanessa Hudgens' Rizzo Tony-worthy?

Do you guys think Vanessa Hudgens would at least be nominated for a Tony her performance as Rizzo? Or would she have won it for "There are Worse Things I Can Do?" I re-watched the show last night. Her acting may not be convincing, but her TAWTICD was definitely a highlight. Beautiful, emotional, and heart breaking (Her dad's death might had to do something with her acting in the song though).

No. She would not have been nominated with that performance.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

He means, I think, IF it had been on broadway.

which is an impossible hypothetical question to answer since none of the premise is even grounded in reality. it wasn't a stage performance, it wasn't a performance on broadway and could therefore never be considered

Yes, of course -- but that's never stopped anyone here from having that kind of conversation before.

Times like this I wish there was a like button on these message boards.

As for Vanessa Hudgens and a hypothetical Tony for the hypothetical version of Grease Live on Broadway... no. Her performance of that song was heartbreaking but her impersonation of Stockard Channing (because that's what it was) was just not good. She was way too concerned with recreating the Rizzo we all know and love, without bringing an ounce of originality to the part. I'm not hating on Vanessa, as I do love her in various different things but she was just not that great as Rizzo. I think in terms of revivals and actors winning Tony's for recreating roles, more often than not the actors in the revival are awarded for bringing something new and fresh to the table, and a lot of times for setting themselves apart from the original characterizations. I did not get that from anyone in the Grease Live cast except maybe Keke Palmer, and that's only because Marty isn't really that memorable in the movie version of Grease, so she had it easy.
