Posted: 6/16/06 at 4:14pmI love me some Vanessa, but she is far too old to play a school girl and I have never heard her "rock out" or "wail" the way that Elphaba does. Sorry, V-it ain't gonna happen.

Posted: 6/16/06 at 4:18pmAna is 38/39 Vanessa is 43/44. Not much difference but Ana has a more youthful presence and Vanessa is a little more regal/diva type. I believe in color-blind casting, but I don't think most would warm to Vanessa doing it.

I could see her more in the Morrible role at this point.

Isn't Vanessa more of a natural crooner? She doesn't have the right voice for the part. I enjoy her jazzier numbers...like her lovely version of "What Child is This?"
She will, however, be headlining in Proactiv: The Musical in the near future, with Jessica Simpson, Judith Light, Kelly Clarkson and P. Diddy.

They'd have to lower the keys for her. I doubt it would work. In fact, it could potentially be a huge disaster.
I love Vanessa Williams, but this wasn't the right role for her.
She'd have been a wonderful Aida, but again, they'd have had to lower the keys to the Toni Braxton pitches, and the songs just don't sound as good when they're sung that way.

Posted: 6/16/06 at 5:52pmso much drama that was very amusing to me. As for williams loved her spider woman, loved her witch more but not elphaba. Shell come along to perfomr again though im sure but in somehting better suited for her.

The character is green! Plus black women have played the role. Vanessa is wrong for the part though. I think she is great but not for wicked.

Somebody please tell the Weisslers to cast Vanessa as Velma in Chicago.
How perfect is she for this role? She's a fabulous triple threat. Which she showed in Spider Woman and the Bye Bye Birdie remake.

She'd make a great Mama Morton too!
Elphaba....just...no. I don't even know what could make that thought cross your mind. Her voice is completely unsuited for the role. It's written for a riffy pop belter, which Vanessa is not. Vanessa is a sultry jazz crooner.
Why, Wicked, WHY!!!!?!?!??!

I am so surprised that muscle23ftl didn't mention that idea first.

She'd be a good Velma, the role is perfect for her.
And if there was a revival of Dreamgirls, she'd be a good choice for Deena.

No offense to anyone, but Vanessa would not be good as Velma or Elphie. I am open minded- this is theatre, afterall. They are two of my favorite roles ever- perhaps I am picky/biased as to who plays them but I can't see it. Not sure why, but I don't.
I saw her in INTO THE WOODS and enjoyed her performance as the Witch, which surprized me. Side note: She was rude and snobby at the stage door both times I saw the show.
Mamma Morton, maybe.

Vanessa would be a wonderful Velma. A most excellent idea.
EponineAmneris, why even mention her alleged rude behavior at the stage door? What relevance does that have to the discussion??

Posted: 6/17/06 at 12:35pmI have always thought Vanessa would be a wonderful Velma. And I agree with everything that has been said about her and Elphaba, she is just not that type of belter. I would love a revival of No Strings with her in it. I even think it might be more interesting for her to play Roxie. You know, to acknowledge the fact that even though she still looks amazing, she is getting old.

Vanessa has already nailed 2 Chita roles. Velma is right up her alley. She showed she can play the perfect b*tch in Bye Bye Birdie, and as I said earlier she showed she can really dance her ass off in BBB, and Spider Woman. And since we can't watch footage of her dancing in Spider Woman. You can watch her dance her ass with Ann Reinking choreography in Birdie.
She is wrong for Mama Morton. But Velma is just perfect for her. Roxie might also work!

Sorry if I came across as harsh before
Didn't mean to...
Anyway...The more I think about it, she could pull off Velma nicely...
How about Fantine in LES MISERABLES?
