If you can't produce Vibratto naturally, in my opinion, singing's not your thing. Sometimes no vibratto is a wonderful thing - on people like Christine Andreas sometimes I'm afraid she's going to have a stroke while she's singing.

my advice is what ever you do don't try and force it, cuz you'll just do more damage that way.

Was that a fat joke?

I know, wow, you poor people and your vibrattos. It's a monster, it is.

This is a question that should be posed to your vocal coach. Off the cuff advice could be very damaging to your vocal cords and also to your future as a singer.

True. Vibrato is a necessary part to professional singing. Most, if not all, professionals have a vibrato. The standard "nice" vibrato is around 6-8 cycles per second. When you produce vibrato, you are bending the note above and below the exact pitch. One cycle is once up and down. For example Brian Stokes Mitchell's vibrato is around 6.5 cycles. Anything below 5 cycles tends to sound like the warbling that is accepted in older "standard" singing. A slow, heavy vibrato was widely used by Merman and other belters in the 30s-60s. Today, think of older singers in church. The older soprano lady who sits next to you and just seems to have that wide irritating sound. In order to be heard the vibrato had to be exaggerated. The trend (with the help of amplification) has been to naturalize the sound by returning to a comfortable and more pure vibrato around the magic 7 number. Anything over 8 tends to sound like Hasselhoff (spl). The infamous goat sound. Also, unlike other musical instruments where you bend the pitch down and then back to the original, in singing you must also extend the pitch up or it will sound machine gunnish. Many people mistake stopping and starting a note for vibrato. If you listen closely, a person using correct vibrato will be sustaining the same volume and base pitch throughout each cycle. Teenagers are still developing vibrato. Work, yes. But do not stress it if you can't get it. Most people take years to perfect their unique sound.

Some people just don't have any vibrato in their singing voices, even if they are trained singers. I worked with this guy a couple years ago doing summer stock--he was a tenor, and although he had been taking lessons for years, his voice was a straight tone. He sounded more like a boy soprano than a tenor! You're still young though. Your voice will change a lot with age.

Derech2 ~ Maybe I'm just being true to my screenname, but do not take anyones advice on the board other than to go see a professional voice teacher. None of us know your voice and things are different for each of us, which is why a trained professional can help you.

Unless you know of a great teacher or two, call your local college and ask to be connected with the music department...they should be able to give you some names of people that might be able to help for a reasonable price.

The sooner that you do it, the sooner you'll be on your way to great singing! I hope that it all works out for you!
