Yesterday I got the DVD and it was actually pretty good. Rachel York was funny in her role and Julie Andrews was good as well..AMAZING.
Has anyone else seen this? I also heard Liza did the show as well.....how was she?

I believe Liza played Julie's role for like a week or something when she was out sick or on scheduled vacation or something. I heard Liza wasn't too bad, but everyone prefered Julie.
yeah I also heard that Raquel Welch was Julies understudy.
Julie took a month vacation, during which time Liza Minnelli replaced her (with predictably dire results). When Julie finally left the show, she was replaced by Raquel Welch, who is nobody's understudy. Without Julie, the show had no reason for being and quickly slunk away.
I adore this show. I think it's hysterical. the book is really funny and perfectly adapted for the stage. the music is fantastic and even the tunes penned by Frank Wildhorn turned out to be some of my favorite songs in the show. the 10th anniversary is this year in October...
I really like Rachel York in this. She was really young, and as you can see, something of a comic genius. Her Norma is quite the loveable loon.
Lesley Anne Warren, the creator of Norma Cassidy, is the comic genius ... though Rachel York did add that very funny bit at the end of "Chicago, Illinois" imitating the break between Julie's chest and head voice.
Lesley Ann Warren.....is she the same girl from "Cinderella"

I had tickets to see Liza, but she cancelled at the last minute. She had severe vocal problems, I believe, which forced her to cancel for the last week or more of performances of her run.

When did she do that? I think it's Rachel's facial expressions that are so funny. She had such a deer-trapped-in-the-headlights look. Pretty fuuny.
I've never seen Leslie Ann Warren do it, so I can't compare, but I loved her in Cinderella
I love this DVD! The cast is wonderful; Julie, Rachel, Gregory, Tony... They all give stellar performances here.
I know a lot of people hate the song "Paris makes me horny", but I find it extremely funny.
Leslie Ann Warren is Norma in the movie. York does a very similar take with the character, but there's something scarily over the edge about Warren in the movie that just takes it further.
I love Norma's "impotence" monologue. for whatever reason I think it's a lot funnier when Rachel does it...
York's Norma imitates Julie's "Le Jazz Hot" break at the end of "Chicago, Illinois" when York and the chorus sing "C! H! I! C! A! G! Ooooooooo -- ooooo!"
--- so how come you're here and King's still in Paris? What's he done got himself another doll?

I was watching the A&E Biography on Liza, and there was a segment on her filling in for Julie in "Victor/Victoria". Apparently Tony Roberts couldn't stand her, becuase she would ad-lib and mess around, and they said he threatened to walk out!
he did walk out, didn't he?

I remember that he "called in sick" for much of the last part her run -- like the final two weeks or so. He REALLY didn't like her.
Yeah, Tony Roberts walked out, and then returned a few days later, but then Liza walked out...

You know what is sad, I have this version and I have never ever seen it yet. Maybe I need to watch it.
PS... on another note why have they never released Will Rogers Follies on DVD that was done in Tokyo.
By the way, I always wondered about the footage they showed while the overture was playing. Did all those celebrities really attend the show just because it was being filmed for some Japanese television channel, or did they just cheat and use footage from the show's opening night?
(For those of you who don't know, the release of Victor/Victoria on DVD/VHS was apparently never in the actors' contracts, the show was originally only supposed to be aired on Japanese television)

I remember when Tony Roberts wasn't coming to work because of Liza and reading in the NY papers that he called in sick, stating he had "influenza, with a z!"
True or not, it's a riot!
DT, that cracks me up
