Raquel Welch with her big rack squashed down as Victor is a funny image.
One of the most hated song by critcs was a bit funny & that was Louis Says by mr Gothic Frank Wildhorn. Maybe that is where the hatred started
Just saw the film version for the first time. i must say that Lesley Ann Warren frightens me. I like her Norma a lot,I find her kind of cool. But Rachel'sis a bit more endearing and lovable.i don't know, they're so different. I know that LAW is the original comic genuis, but I still think Rachel's incredibly funny.
And of course Julie Andrews rox my sox!
as far as I know the critics hating "Louis Says" was due to the lyrics, choreography and the backdrop and mirrors. it had nothing to do with the music. Frank contributed some rather "un-Frank Wildhorn" like songs for this show. including "Trust Me" and "Living in the Shadows" which are two of my absolute favorites in the show. "Louis Says" was cut though during the run. and for the national tour and the TUTS staging the song "Attitude" was used in its place... TUTS kept "Paris Makes Me Horny" but the song was cut for the national tour. also when Liza did the show she sang the song "Who Can I Tell?" in place of "Crazy World" with music by Leslie Bricusse.
By chance, I actually saw both Julie Andrews and Liza in this show. I liked the show; but Liza was for die-hard Liza fans, only. She was really pretty bad. As much as Julie was having vocal difficulties at this time, she still sang rings around Liza and, more surprisingly, danced rings around Liza. Liza didn't even move in the show. But, the Liza fans in the audience loved her anyway. I can't remember what Liza did instead of hitting the high note. She sang a town or place in Canada, I think. I can't remember. It was kind of stupid and didn't make any sense that it would break glass, whatever it was.
I guess I'm the exception to the rule because I absolutely hated this DVD. (I never saw the show on stage myself.) For me the production just emphasized how great the film version was. All I had to do was see LAW and I'd start laughing and I loved James Garner and Alex Karras as well.
Of course the best part of the movie was Robert Preston. Tony Roberts couldn't touch that performance in his dreams.
Liza would sing 'Saskatchewaaaaaaaaan' to break the glass.
they took an almost flawless movie and turned it into a piece of sh!t.
I disagree that the movie was flawless. There were a lot of unnecessary plot turns and some jokes that fall flat on their asses. the musical is not perfect either but has a more fine tuned plot line and just every cheesy homosexual joke/referance imaginable but it still, in my opinion, is ultimately more enjoyable than the movie... for two hours and twenty minutes I forget about everything else...
I don't think Liza came in for Julie's vacation. I believe it was because Julie had to have her gallbladder removed and they needed someone to keep the show open while Julie recovered.
Liza looked like a penguin when she wore the tuxedo.
I laughed.
Seriously though, when I saw V/V with Liza, I kept thinking about how she's Judy Garland's (god bless her) daughter, and I think that kind of ruined it for me. I kept seeing Toto and Dorothy during the dance numbers. It was an odd experience to be sure.

In fairness to York, Blake Edwards didn't allow her to do much more than imitate Warren's performance. I did think York was terrific in the tnago with Andrews. Though most critics trashed the show, they did all favorably note the tango as one of the few thing that worked in the show.
I think York did a great job, Warren or no Warren. At least she's funny, and having not seen the movie version, I think that she gave a great performance anyway. And she has natural stage presence, so whatever she's in, you'll know she'll be great.
A penguin that can sing and dance
As for the movie, I don't get the ending. I've seen it a couple of times, and I don't think the ending makes any sense.
Liza definitely went in for Julie's vacation. When Julie had her gall bladder surgery, Anne Runolfsson did the role. I know this because I, originally, had tickets for that time. When Julie had the surgery, I exchanged my tickets for a later date. The Liza performances were much later.
My mistake.
I was fortunate to see Julie well before vocal or gall bladder problems.
I thought Julie was great in the show. I thought it was a great show. Certainly better than most I was seeing at the time, Big, Sunset Blvd., etc.
