Hi everyone

I'll be visiting NYC on January 9 and 10th.

For January 10, really wanted to re Dear Evan Hansen but it is sold out Visiting Jan 9-10 the Present or Waitress, Monday shows so I am debating either The Present or Waitress.

i know they are completely different but I want to ask which show you think is the better show/production.

i have never seen any play as whenever I visit I have limited time there and always go for musicals but this time I feel like I wouldn't mind giving a try at a play.

The Present is a limited engagement and has the usually wonderful Cate Blanchett but Jessie Mueller will be leaving Waitress soon and I hear she is great.

My favourite show is Once, followed by Hedwig.

---

i would also like to ask where can I find a list of shows that will not be dark on Monday January 9th. Only managed to find a list of shows playing each day of the week over the holiday season but not for after that.

Thanks!

I just did some research, and neither of those shows will be performing on January 9th.

I think you misread his question..the decision between the two shows mentioned is for Tuesday the 10th. Additionally, he/she is looking for another Monday show.

I haven't see the Present so I can't compare- but I certainly would recommend Waitress.

PThespian, I've said it before and I'll say it again...They really don't pay you enough over there...Your continued enthusiasm is enjoyable...

As for which show, it's a simple matter of preference...

If your never seen a play before, there are worse things than starting with Cate Blanchett. Loved her performance and thought it was simply incredible...

If you feel like something lighter and shorter, go for Waitress. You can certainly do worse than seeing Jessie.

I second School of Rock as a potential Monday show!

But to answer your question, go with The Present. It's a limited run and you'll get to see the great Cate Blanchett on stage. (Full disclosure, I didn't think much of Waitress.)

A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

Well from what I've been hearing, definitely catch The Present.

I loved Waitress and no disrespect to Blanchett but she couldn't move me anymore than Jessie Mueller did.

The only review of a show that matters is your own.

Have you thought of doing standing room for Evan Hansen?

They are completely different shows, but I enjoyed The Present more (since I'm a big Cate Blanchett fan). If you feel like watching a 3 hour Chekhov adaptation with superb acting from the leads go see The Present. If you want a emotionally resonant, small little musical with a great score and leads, go see Waitress. Sorry I can't help you more than that as they're practically impossible to compare.

Playbill has a weekly schedule of Broadway shows that they'll release the week of, but that's probably too last minute for you. I suggest going to the show's your thinking of seeing's websites and checking their performance calendars.

Thanks everyone for your answers and recommendations. It's greatly appreciated!

I ended up buying tickets for The Present for the Jan 10. I'll settle with seeing Waitress at another trip with a new lead actress.

PThespian: I can't believe I got an answer from someone from the School of Rock show. The show definitely sounds like a lot of fun!

somechrysanthemumtea: thanks for the tip about standing room for Dear Evan Hansen! I get to NYC on Sunday Jan 8, and I think there is a performance at 7pm, not sure if I can be in line early enough to score standing room tickets but I think I really want to try to it out.

Hey blueshadows, I'll be there at about the same time (6th - 9th).  I have tix to Sweet Charity and Falsettos and have three slots to fill.  I was just asssuming DEH would fill one of them, but all the shows that weekend are completely sold out - I knew it was popular, but didn't realize it was that popular!  I'm thinking "The Present" will take a slot for me over "Waitress" since the latter will tour (although I'm sure Jessie is great).

BTW, I checked on DEH tix for my May trip and seats are already relatively limited for then!

Go see Cate Blanchett- the second scene alone will make it totally worth it. Excellent production. Waitress was good, but generic, simple and frankly unoriginal.
