So far I agree with the reviews. Jarrod and Lauren were definitely exceptional, though.
Me too!
I'm more in agreement with the Courier Post and
Philadelphia Inquirer reviews than the Star-Ledger review.
From where I was sitting I couldn't tell what were
the headlines on the newspaper articles projected
on the screen.
Despite all its faults, people near Philadephia should
go take a look especially with discount tickets. It is not
often we get a chance to see a musical in development.

Posted: 7/22/05 at 10:12amI noticed that when they showed some of the newspaper articles on the big screen that the titles were readable, but the text was backwards (as if projected so you could only read from the rear). Looked kindof strange and a little confusing actually - was trying to read thingss, but some were backwards and some weren't).

Oh, I could not make out what the reporter was typing
on the typewrite either.
Are you going back again?

I couldn't read what he was typing either - made no sense.
Probably not going back - almost a 2 hr drive for me. If it comes to Broadway however......

It was a two-hour trip for me, too, last night, but I'm glad I made it. Do I think it's ready for Broadway? Not at the moment but with some tweaking, I think success on Broadway might be possible. An audience ready for something a bit more serious would enjoy it. Has anyone mentioned that it is done in the form of a flashback of the high points and low points in Scott and Zelda's life? I for one did not realize that it was one day in the life of the reporter interviewing Zelda in the mental hospital and writing the story of their life (hence the flashbacks). I think that needs to be clarified (or maybe I'm just a little dense). The music is great. choreography excellent and the acting by the principals very fine. I'm hoping for a success for Frank.

Posted: 7/22/05 at 11:22amI must be dense too - but yes, it was in the form of a flashback... Makes a little more sense now. Just thought the guy at the typewriter was an indication that the play was about a writer.

There was a mention of a two-woman duet earlier in Act Two (shades of "In His Eyes" from J&H). But i thought Zelda was the only real female role...those who saw, any enlightenment?
much appreciated. And thanks for any other reactions to choregraphy, i have enjoyed Blankenbuehler (sp?) as a dancer and want to know how he switches into making dances.
Many thanks. Also, still waiting for those who saw the first preview and then later for changes incorporated. i love watching that happen and never am around long enough to do so.

Posted: 7/22/05 at 12:42pmThe woman she sang "Yes!" with (but that was first act) was her mom. Her mom talked actually, didn't sing. (Leslie Alexander I believe).

Posted: 7/22/05 at 12:43pmi believe that song was in the reading. From what was implied, i thought this might be an added number for Act Two. That's where Wildhorn "typically" puts the female duet.
re: WAITING FOR THE MOON - Wildhorn's Latest#59
Posted: 7/22/05 at 12:45pmI don't remember any female duets.

Posted: 7/22/05 at 12:53pmOk, I definitely agreed with the Star Ledger the most. The Courier Post's english was terrible which made me not want to read their review. And The Philadelphia Inquirer does not like musical theatre as an art form, again making me not want to read his post. Also, the Inquirer did like the show but had issues that it was not a biography on stage. As Jack and Frank said it is LOOSELY based on their lives, hence the title is now called Waiting for the Moon. I agree with the reviews that the show does need to be tightened up, but do not agree with how much work the Courier suggests the show needs to make it to Broadway.

Thanks for all the comments!
From what I recall, there was a female duet near the beginning of Act 2 and the lyrics went something like: "I'll trade tomorrow for one more yesterday."
I am wondering if that was still in the show.
re: WAITING FOR THE MOON - Wildhorn's Latest#65
Posted: 7/22/05 at 4:58pmthat lyrical sentiment is definitely in the spirit of Zelda in the asylum, but i don't recall it. Anyone else notice it in the current incarnation?!?!

RE: Courier Post review: Interesting comment. Bob is a long time critic for the Courier.
Blankenbuehler, love his name, is a top notch choreg. and pulled out all the tricks for this one. We got some nice photos of him and his dancers for the article.
My photographer/friend, Jim, suggested at the post event that they might consider opening with her in the mental ward to set the wheels in motion and then go to the filmed typing to start the show. Shall I pass this along?

Posted: 7/22/05 at 5:49pmPB i think i recall you are a press agent or talent agent/booker of some sort. Do you know if the Times covered the opening?

I don't know if they covered, but could find out from Lenape, if you like. Correct, I am a booking agent/events planner.

The issues of the flashback being introduced in the beginning to clarify it for the audience, plus the use of the projections of the reporter at the beginning were all discussed at length at the post-performance audience seminar after the first full runthrough.
The show was originally formatted that way (linear with it being indicated clearly at the get-go that it was all seen in flashback) but later changed to make it non-linear.
The creative staff said that they would consider rewriting it again to make it clearer since so many in the audience maintained that they didn't "get" that the whole show was a flashback - and that the entire reporter interview in the asylum with Zelda (which constituted the entire show) took place in the one day (the day of the fire which took her life).
There was additional confusion that the man shown in the film typing at the beginning and end was not Jarrod Emick - and since we didn't get to see the reporter til much later there was much confusion. One audience member stated that he thought maybe Jarrod wasn't available for the day the film was made and so a substitute actor was used...since many thought the typist was supposed to be F. Scott Fitzgerald (it was the reporter, not Fitzgerald).
Throughout the seminar the cast and creators asked for a showing of hands from the audience about issues such as this so they could get a fair reading of audience reaction - and what people understood and didn't understand about this show.
It is still being changed as they go along.
By next Sunday, it will be interesting to see what the show is like for the final Lenape performance.
