Ethel Merman. Her skanky-stanky skeleton could be an hommage to Burton's crappy THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

Patti Lupone! Shes downright famous. Look at her credits and if your a big musical theatre fan you'll know shes flipping amazing on stage! I watched her in Sweeney Todd in February this year and she was nothing short of completely engaging and highly entertaining. Though I dont think it will happen in the movie...I most certainly think that she would make a brilliant Mrs. Lovett. Shes only played the role ALOT!

When this project was first announced and when Depp and Burton were attached, I though hard about who would make a Burton-eqsue, quirky, poised, ..."odd" Lovett and finaly came to the conclusion that Caroline O'Connor would be fantastic in the role. Sure- it won't happen, but she's got the pipes, done West End & Broadway and would have excellent chemistry w/ Depp. Some of you might know her as Nini-Legs-In-The-Air from Moulin Rouge (or as Ethel Merman in the ANYTHING GOES segment of De-Lovely), but her stage credits are numerous (Velma in Chicago on Broadway).

Caroline O'Connor, would be great, but you right again, doubt Burton even knows who she is, why is it some the most versatile and TRUE talents don't get the rrecongnition they deserve, oh I get it, it's because they're not commercial enough?!
Caroline, was great in her Ethel Cameo in, Delovely, and Baz lurman loves her! her part in moulin rogue was a higlight! and hse was phenomenal in over the rainbow in Australia, she has pipes of heavy weight gold, can dance up a tornado and her acting ability is faultless!
your my new fav person! lol
I think I should.
I'm 41 which is around Depp's age, am a brunette, and can be devious.
Too bad I have no talent...

Patti, absolutely. Toni Colette, yes, absolutely -- her star is rising. I think Parker Posey would be VERY smart also, she has such a dark sensability. Helena is too obvious and likely lacks a wide draw here (pity). Or Kate Winslet, they were so good in 'Finding Neverland'. Please ... not Rene Zelleweiger this time. And Kathy Bates? Despite my affection for her would she have box office draw to match Depp? He's a bit young anyway. Jodie Foster has the acting chops. Emma Thompson. Megan Mullaly. Cyndi Lauper ... maybe. And even tho I liked Evita, I am glad Madonna has abandonned acting and is sticking to singing.

It has already been mentioned on this board..Helen Bonham Carter is Mrs. Tim Burton and, therefore, will be Mrs. Lovett. Word is that Burton is doing it as a showcase for her.
Love Helena Bonham Carter. Especially in Husbands and Wives.

Patti really shouldnt do this, she is not that big of a star, and is too old compared with Depp's Sweeney
i still say Kathy Bates.
"i still say Kathy Bates."
