I think Tim Burton is the perfect person to take on this dark comedic/dramatic musical masterpiece, Johnny Depp is an interesting choice and jim Broadbent too? But who do you think should be cast in the role of Mrs. Lovett the best role in the play? Also would love to hear the rest of the cast suggestions too

Michael Cerveris was a tad bit too young for the current revival, but in the end he pulled it off beautifully. Johnny Depp is 2 or 3 years younger than Cerveris. So that's still pushing it age-wise. For a film audience who may not be familiar with the character, is it best to start them off with *such* a young Sweeney, considering his back story?
I think Kathy Bates would make a kick-ass Mrs. Lovett.

wow, she would be Foster
I never thought of her in the role, but she would be great!!! she is kind-of younger looking, and can sing and everything
wow, she really should be considered to do this...
:)
good idea!
No one knows who Patti LuPone is. Who the hell is Patti LuPone?! I don't know who she is, she's never done anything really to get her name outside the theater community. That won't make money.

I wonder if he'll go with Helena.
I hope he doesnt do the nepotism thing and cast Helena. That is the same as casting Patti Lupone. No one knows who Helena is outside of indie film circles even though he is in all of Tim's movies. She has never caught on as a movie star. I think Kathy Bates would be great, Glenn Close would be awesome, Julianne Moore would probably do a nice job as well. I would love to see Tilda Swinton or Natasha Richardson, but they are too obscure to be cast.
Whoa- Kathy Bates would be amazing. I never had that thought. Geez. She's pretty well known, and Oscar-winner (For Misery) and she can sing!
Watching Meryl Streep in "Mother Courage" last week I was thinking how wonderful she would be as Mrs. Lovett. The best living actress we have today with one of the best actors in one of the best musicals ever written sure would be a treat to see...
Knowing Burton, it will probably be Helena or Winona Ryder or something. Wasn't there some Kate Winslet rumours?
My first thought was, Meryl Streep would be a fabulous Lovett.
But Kathy Bates would be brilliant casting.
The answer is very simple. Cyndi Lauper.
They'll have Johnny Depp as the star, that alone will make money. It would be better to have someone who can actually sing the role of Mrs. Lovett, than a big star who might not be able to pull it off.

im pushing for Kathy or Meryl
they are both well known, both have won Oscars (as far as I know), and are both able to sing and act the roles awesomely!
:)
I think Meryl could pull off the role vocally, especially on film where things can be altered and fixed. Remember that Madonna singing songs from "Evita" live sounds a lot different than her singing them on film.

Please keep in mind that Mr. Depp is already cast, so Mrs. Lovett would have to match him in some way. While I agree that Ms. Streep would be phenomenal in the role, they would be completely inappropriate opposite each other.
DG, I actually think they'd be perfect together. I always pictured Mrs. Lovett as being older than Todd anyways, so in my mind they would compliment each other wonderfully.

Meryl as Lovett, Emma Thompson as the Beggar Woman. That would be awesome. DO NOT CAST that Rossum girl as Joanna.

Jordan - with your perspective, I see how you would like it - and, it's all subjective anyway It just wouldn't work for me. I wanted a Streep and Kline movie reunion.
Toni Colette. Hands down.
Though Kathy Bates would be an amazing choice as well.
Helena would make a much better beggar woman.
LuPone would be great, but as many of you have said, her film work has been limited to supporting roles in unknown films.
However, I could see Kathy Bates or even Catherine O'Hara working. Johnny Depp is already inspired casting.
However, as a few of you have said, Johnny Depp will bring in the money. If Patti LuPone is cast in the role of Mrs. Lovett, it won't be a setback financially.
