Bernie, would be amazing, how is she vocally these days?
Shes is cark, sexy, cute and a powerhouse, actor/singer!
If burton were on to it genius or even Toni collete, dat gal can sing
"cark"? Never heard of Bernie in that way!
If Mrs. Lovett has to be older, Toni Collette is out of the running, isn't she?
Anything is still possible at this stage...
EDIT: That sounded more cryptic than intended. Toni is younger, but plays older. Not to say that she's in the running.
Bernadette is in great vocal shape.

I mean to say Bernies, dark as in a dark quirky humour and stuff, lol,
Bernie or meryl or Toni even patti, but she's got bad diction...
Tom, my Aussie pick is Toni Lamond. I honestly believe no one would do it better.

great to here, Bernie is in good vocal, can we just give it to her! can someone ring Tim? lol
She would make Mrs Lovette so amazing, she has sex appeal for the "movie" audience and can belt like no-one,, has brilliant comic timing, is a tv and film "star" and a geuine broadway diva.
Go Bernie
any one is un sure, look at hewr catalouge of work, mostly Sondheim it's were she excells.
Into the Woods, Sunday in the park..need I sa more?!

Loretta Swit.
Tom! I want reaction to my great idea, please.
Sorry, Rathnait62. I can't place the name with a face. I checked her IMDB, but still came up blank.
Lamond
Without any doubt the only person to play her today would be Cyndi Lauper, the only other one I would ever consider has passed away 7 years ago my favorite gal of all time the legendary great Madeline Kahn. Give Cyndi Lauper her due.
Like the idea of Collete but agree the age thing won't work. Thompson however would be great and the age difference would work.
I'm curious- who would u cast for the Judge? Need a good bass or at least baritone, plus name recogniton.

Isn't the rumor that Jim Broadbent will play the Judge?

They already cast the judge Jim Broadbent they already announced it
If Lovett is supposed to older, I say Meryl or Kathy Bates.

While I love Kathy Bates, She has kinda lost the spark she once had and her voice is so one note eg, Annie remake. She's not a mrs Lovett.
Merly Streep is amazing and I believe she would re-invent the role and be superb and Win an oscar or 6, lol. But I don't imagine she has the vocally versatility and power to belt as Mrs Lovett.
Love ya Meryl (-:
And While Mrs. Lovett does need to be older, while apparently, Johnny looks very young remeber and that would be huge gap and be wierd chemistry, you've got to think of who will be cast in terms of working with Johnny boy,
Thats why I think alot of people are saying Toni, She plays older and mature, is hell funny and incrediable actress, singer and dancer (trained in musicals) and can belt out a tune like a true broadway diva, while appealing to the movie audience (-:

Why do we fuss about this and guess all the time. Just wait it out. Your words aren't going to change Mr. Burton's decision.

frankly, I think that Kathy Bates and Johnny Depp would have great chemistry. They're both amazing actors and don't forget the 'romance' is only coming from one party - Lovett.
No matter what, Depp will have to be aged. Even if just a little bit.
I think it will be an interesting film just seeing that Johnny Depp and Tim Burton are involved. I love Toni Collette, but she doesn't seem to be right to play Mrs. Lovette, also she seems too young to play that role. Give her another musical to do instead.
I like the idea of Meryl Streep, I think Patti LuPone would be great too. We will see what will happen.
