SueleenGay, AngActing is a great talent and a great humanitarian. Most casting directors appreciate a resume that knows from brevity and Ang has that in spades!

>> But the resume posted here is not even one page.

Yes, it is . . . but on the website the print is smaller. On the back of my photo's it is one full readable page. Casting people compliment me on my resume and how good it looks.

I wouldn't judge it by the small print of the website. Of course, I guess there's room for more. Nevertheless, I like to keep the "bigger", more important information there.

What is your experience Sue? Because, casting directors really don't want to read a novel or see lots of fine print of every little thing you do in a week. It's get's tedious. All they do is look for is some experience, your confidence when you walk in the audition room and your skills during your audition.

Reading my resume . . . casting directors and directors really do not care about each and every small role or print job or whatever I've done in the last week. They care, since I mostly focus on theatre, that I can do a show and have stage presence.

And sure, if I am going to a t.v. or film audition . . . I have another resume focusing more on the t.v./film work. I work a lot and it's so much easier to just tell them [the casting people] verbally at the audition when and if they ask.

The Casting Director: What have you been doing, Angela?

"Oh, last week, I did an episode of 'Law and Order" . . .etc., etc.

I update quarterly . . . usually.

And my wonderful fan . . . thank you for your note(s)! Correct! They really appreciate brevity, as any employer.

I used to work for a career recruiting agency, and we always recommended that job seekers keep their resume's (Accountants, Executives, Secretaries) to one page -- whenever possible.

You must be very young, Sue . . . or inexperienced in the professional world? Or just busting my chops to make this whole thread about me!!! LOL! Of course, I'm certainly "not brief" in these posts!!! LOL!

Never ask an actor about themselves . . . if you don't want to hear it . . . because we will tell you!!! LOL!

I love the joke about that . . .

A man comes home and finds his wife in bed with an actor.
The husband asks the naked man, "Hey, what are you doing?!"
The actor answers, "Well, I just did a commercial and a pilot . . ."

So, you get the picture, Sue. Us actors, and if you are one, you have an awful lot of interest in me and my career; us actors love, love, love to talk about ourselves! *wink*

Back the true thread . . .

Who, out there, is going to this audition thing? And hey, humor me, tell us all about your background! I do admit, just like Sue, I have an incredible curiousity about others and their journey.

Yes, I do truly care about others, but accept that I can also be very self-centered. Not unusual for us actors!

I really am not trying to be rude or bust your chops, but if, as you say, that resume is for theatre, why do you have your film work at the top? And if you did an episode of Law and Order or Ally McBeal or a film with Jim Carrey or Chris Walken, I think those are the credits you would want on your truncated resume, not Japanese television production or an NYU student film.

Look Sue, everyone in the business will tell you NOT to list background work. Did you not get that I did background work?

The film work in on top because the temp-plate from the webmaster places it there, actually. On my paper resume, theatre is on top.

Quite a few of the directors (on the Jim Carrey, Chris Walken and Ally McBeal sets) moved me up to "featured" background players [because they were impressed with my acting abilities]. Many background players just follow directions and do not use much expression as many of them are not actors -- just folks looking for quick money to sit around all day. I even had and have other backgound people ask me . . . "You must be a real actor!" etc. because I take any work I do, even background work, as a chance to show my talent and skill. And it is noticed.

But, in the end, it is still considered "background" work. And my agent (the one in Los Angeles and the one here) have told me to leave it off my resume until there's enough of a role to put on a reel. The Japanese work and the commercials, which I list if they want it, are things I can make a reel from -- which I am in the process of doing.

On Ally McBeal I was in every single shot and working directly with Calista Flockhart (nevertheless, it was all acting and no speaking on my part) -- the whole episode was redone WITHOUT me and all the other players; and moved to a scene with only Lucy Liu and Calista. The Judge, the Jury (I was the Court Clerk) and the Defendant (who had a huge speaking role) -- we were all cut out and it never aired. They did show the back of my head upon airing of the show. Yet, it was three days of 12-hours of work [each day] for all of us!

I do run a meet-up group called "The Business of Show Business" and sounds like you need to attend, instead of making this thread about me, yes, I am helping, too.

What I do has worked for me, should it matter (to you) if I list it on my resume' or have to PROVE to you I've done what I've done. Unless you are thinking of casting me in something? Of course, it is my choice to prove it to you, too. Thus, I cannot blame you for it. I take that back. It's my choice.

Trust me, Sue, casting directors ask me and are fine with hearing about it from me and not having to read all the details of three days on Ally McBeal, or how Milos Forman and Jim Carrey pulled me aside [out of 1000 background actors] and personally thanked me for helping Jim Carrey stay in character . . . even when the camera's were off, during breaks.

Yeah, now that's a fun story of Jim Carrey (as Andy Kaufman) having an off-camera "duel" [for like ten minutes] because 'Andy' grabbed me as we exited the set. Yes, he grabbed me!!! It was hilarious and I wish it were on camera.

How do I relate that on a resume when it was only considered "extra" work? Thus, that is best left to verbal conversation as appropriate for the audition. Of course, I do have good reel material from the film because they were impressed enough to give me two huge closeups! The only reason they didn't let me do any speaking lines was because I wasn't SAG and they didn't want to Taft-Hartley me at the time.

Now you know, Sue. And so does the world of Broadway World, if they read this thread about me! Thanks, though, Sue . . . I feel like a celebrity. Not to mention, I love WICKED and my dream is to play "Elphaba" -- it is appropriate. At least, if I end up in WICKED, it will be even more uncanny.

I'll take this as law of attraction . . . preparing me for my career as I get closer and closer to my dreams. In fact, I will be on Broadway in an acting/singing role before 2008 is over. I know it now!

Love you, Sue . . .you've made my week! I hope I can count you as a fan, too. I love all my fans, both of you here and all the other ones I've gathered over the years!

MY SCHEDULE:
My last stage gig was November . . .as an actor.

But, two weeks ago, my play (a short play I wrote) was on stage at "Manhattan Theatre Source"; to rave reviews. So, I am still out and about. I will be putting up a couple of my plays this year, too and probably be in one of them, at least. I am also adapting a musical and will definitely be in it. I plan on doing it as an Equity Mini-Workshop.

I will keep you all up to date on it!

I do appreciate and love you, my fans. I will be in Los Angeles in March and will be having meetings with my LA agent at that time for possible work, too.

I remember when the Bo Derek "Tarzan, The Ape Man" was released in 1981, Merv Griffin asked Miss Derek what it was like to work in a film where the lead male (Tarzan) did not speak and she replied with something that has really stuck with me all these years. What she said was, "90% of acting is reacting." Let me repeat that: "90% of acting is reacting."

And I do know that when I have watched AngActing's YouTubes of her singing along to the Wicked cast recording, Miss Derek's words have come back to me. Ang knows that 90% of acting is reacting. Watch Ang when Kristin Chenuworth is singing or acting a G(a)linda portion of a song or scene. Ang is reacting, subtly nodding, or maybe biting a lip, blinking with meaning. What I am saying is, Ang is there, in the moment, if we were aware of the pill bottles or the Vaseline jar on the shelves behind her when the scene first started, by now we are in Oz, with Elphaba. See? She's not even Ang anymore, she's Elphaba, reacting.

And since that's 90% of the battle, maybe this IS her year.

Thank you, FindingNamo . . . you really moved me! And I am deeply grateful for those who support me and enjoy my work. I love you all! I will keep your words as one of the greatest compliments I've ever received!

>> FROM COLLEEN_LEE: I've met a lot of narcissitic and

>> cream of the crop.

You obviously haven't met me, then . . . I am anything but narcissitic or egotistical; at least, in person. Perhaps my writing comes across that way?

I freely share everything . . my money (when I have it), free coaching, my shoulder to cry on, my love, my home (last year I had four different friends who got to stay completely FREE in New York when I put them up in my apartment -- one from Canada, one from England and two from the West Coast) and my heart and advise with anyone who wants or needs it. In fact, Colleen, write me a private e-mail . . . I'd be happy as punch to be a buddy, a friend. I love making new friends!

Also, actors who do sing -- this is a heads up (I think in May or June) . . . that Mini-Workshop I'm doing. I will be putting out the word for singing actors (male and female) to cast the original, brilliant musical I'm working on! This will be an Equity workshop. This musical has already been on stage in 1997 and did very well. I am adapting it, making it better and the cast is large. Think "Wicked" meets "Les Miserables" as for style of music . . .

Thank you, Phyllis! I'd have fun with that role, too . . .

Oh yes, Jim was a hoot . . .! I did meet Courtney as she was in that scene. Mostly, though, in between takes, Courntey played with her little girl. It was sweet. It was obvious how much Courtney loves her daughter; no matter what was said to the contrary. She only had eyes for her child and would just shoot her scenes and go play with her . . .what is her name? I forgot the child's name.

Jim wouldn't let us call him "Jim" . . . he likes to stay in character the whole time and we had to call him "Andy".

At one point, when "Andy" was hanging out with us 'extra's', a guy called out "Hey, Jim!" He reacted . ..

JIM: You mean, Jim Carrey?
The Guy: Yeah
JIM: Oh, yeah, I met him . . .he is so talented! But, I'm Andy.

We all laughed, of course.

And Colleen thinks I'm egotistical?! LOL! Hang with Jim Carrey for 14 hours . . . although, he is funny about it.

Okay folks, nevertheless . . . I want to hear about all the folks who audition at this convention on January 28th! I want to know what happens and how it goes for you all.

Ang reminds me of those people on the American Idol auditions that think they're going to be the next superstar but are tone deaf, deluded, borderline retarded and thus become a national joke.

Your opinion . . . about my singing. I've been in tons of musicals. And one song on myspace is not the standard or a fair representation of my ability.

One song I did after being away from voice lessons for ten years, late at night with no sleep at a kareoke bar, on a dare. I just began regular voice lessons again only three months ago. And my YouTube singing is better . . . particularly the one's after my voice lessons [which are after I sing with the cast recording of "Wicked"; not the one with the cast recording]and getting my voice in better shape. I do have a way to go (it's been ten years of other things) -- but am improving by leaps and bounds.

Thus, your opinion is only one and unless you are a casting director or vocal coach. I don't respect your unresearched opinion of my work.

Um, FTR, I am a vocal coach. And your youtube videos are not much better.

I know this might come as a shock to you, because your "friends" around you are trying to spare your feelings, but you really, truly, honestly cannot sing. This is not a matter of a voice that just "needs more training", this is a matter of a voice that is never going to be able to improve to reach a performance level.

>> Ang reminds me of those people on the American Idol auditions
>> that think they're going to be the next superstar but are

Again, Colleen, you like to throw around diagnosis with absolutely no credentials to do so. Get a life, Colleen . . . !

I am not tone-deaf, at all . . . I am not deluded . . . I am not borderline anything . . .I am highly intelligent, I am realistic and know it takes work and dedication to improve, etc., that no one is perfect and that being cruel without any credentials at all.

No one in New York, particularly casting directors, would "lie" to me about my abilities. They have plenty of people to "cast" a musical, thus, if numerous directors choose me over dozens or more who can sing . . . I must have something of a talent to be chosen for roles.

Since neither you or Sueleen have been in my auditions, or heard everything I do . . . your's is an opinion based on very little.

My YouTube singing is not "that bad" . . . it needs work. But, it is in tune [even great singers have a glitch from time to time], there is a strength in my tone and as I head to my 12th voice lesson (after a ten-year break), it is improving greatly.

I never claimed to be Barbara Streisand. And you know, some people on this board hate Idina Menzel as a singer. I am not saying I am anything like her, because I am not . . . still, not everyone is her fan and some think she cannot sing.

Opinion. I am nothing like those on American Idol who are, indeed, out-of-tune, screaming or monotone. I carry a tune! And you are deaf if you cannot hear that!

But, I agree with one thing. I am not a pop singer. And even though I adore rock and roll . . . and would love to be like Pat Benatar. I am not of that voice quality. Besides I began as an opera singer, so this is transition for me. I am unlearning lots and lots of opera technique.

I am more traditional musical theatre, have to work on belting (not my strong suit) and I'm great at folk music (i.e. from the 60s). If it were 1965, I could sing with people like Peter, Paul and Mary or Julie Collins.

Yikes. You're in awfully deep.

Again, I am credentialed. But, whatever, you're not going to believe the few people who are actually doing a favor and being honest with you.

Continue to work at that "career", but darling, it's not going to happen for you. I'm sorry, you just can't sing.

It's not "my friends"! I am talking about casting directors who cast me in musicals, in singing roles! When they have other choices! And casting directors have no reason to "spare" my feelings. I am not a sensitive bubble of tears. I don't even come across like that. Mostly, I am accused of something that rhymes with witch. Thus, people often tell me the "truth" with no care about my feelings.

Even though I have been in "professional" musicals? Fine. You are mistaken and not my vocal coach. Move on. Not your job to "save me". I'd take your rants seriously if I wasn't getting work; but I am. Thus, I know you are wrong.

I hate to join in on this argument. You seem like a very NICE person who really WANTS to be on Broadway. But, many people want to be on Broadway. The first step is to have god given talent. You then must have strong vocal, acting, and dance training. I agree with the above posters that you do not have a strong enough voice, that even WITH vocal lessons will allow you to be cast in a singing role on Broadway (particullarly Elphaba). There are hundreds of amazing girls graduating every year from the top musical theatre programs, and your voice is not even as good as their's were when they were in high school.

And please don't argue that I have no right to judge, as you willingly put videos of yourself on myspace and youtube. I am a professional Equity actor/singer/dancer, and trained at one of the top MT programs.

I'm not saying to give up completely, but aim for the comedic character actress roles who don't sing!
