I saw the show near the beginning of the Toronto run, sometime in the middle, and then closer to the end. The cast got much better by the end - at least I thought so. Also, about the applauding: for some reason, Toronto audiences are much more reserved than American audiences. There was not a lot of cheering going on at any performance I was at. You'd get a few odd people (like me) who'd cheer, but mostly they were quiet during the show. But they always gave a standing ovation at the end of the show (and once at the end of the first act).
