WIZARD OF OZ

They are used to kind of wake the audience up before the big finale. A couple of songs before the end. Refers to when B'way shows used to start at 8:30pm and so the song would come around 11 O Clock!

Gimme Gimme from Thoroughly Modern Millie
Betrayed from The Producers
No Good Deed from Wicked
A Change in Me from Beauty and the Beast
The Best of Times from La Cage

And the ultimate eleven o'clock number - Rose's Turn from Gypsy!

Hmmm. Why does Glinda get the 11 o'clock number? Who cares about what she thinks? Sure, Grizabella in CATS appears for about five minutes before belting her face off with Memory but Grizabella essentially IS the plot of CATS. The end of the show belongs to Dorothy.

Don't have a problem with a production number for the Witch (and hopefully some kind of sing off between her and Dorothy) but not sure about the opening number. I would have thought that the only reason to sing in Kansas is as an escape, as encapsulated by Somewhere Over The Rainbow - having the farmhands or whatever sing something seems besides the point to me.

I'm sure Jeremy Sams knows what he's doing, though, even if I have my doubts about ALW at times...

I'm guessing that Glinda's 11'o Clock number will be when she tells Dorothy that she get home by clicking her heels.

Will be interesting to hear a new opening number.

Sounds like the Wiz to me.

Well, if you're being 100% technical, Elphaba and Nessarose are Maguire's creations based on the two unnamed Wicked Witches that Baum created...so calling them by that name would make you a non-Oz purist.

Also, there's no reason to suspect that what ALW is doing will bastardize the original book in anyway...considering that the MGM film (much as I do love and cherish it) is a bastardization of the original novel...so if you're an Oz purist, you should probably hate the movie, too.

If that was a dig at me husky darling, I probably wasn't too clear when I said I was an OZ purist. I meant the film.

Everyone should forget about wicked in this equation. It was written a million years later and the whole point of it is to give back story, as an explanation. It is clever, and witty but highly flawed. (Even though I loved it)

The set design has started to get built at the Palladium WIZARD OF OZ

But they have the Royal Variety Show there first :S

WIZARD OF OZ

I was thinking the same thing. Didn't they build over the set for THE SOUND OF MUSIC for the RVP 2 years or so back.

I suppose they could do some work there...after all, I doubt the RVP needs the benefit of the whole stage?

As a huge Wicked fan I just have to ask, chaildcatcher, how is Wicked flawed. Personally I feel the characters, story and music are much better than Wizard of Oz and there's a lot more depth.

Personally I understand the Witch having a number but surely Dorothy should get the 11 O'clock number singing something about how 'There's no place like home'

WIZARD OF OZ

OMG!! Childcatcher are you brave or foolhardy? Coming on here and offering criticism of 'Wicked'!!

I once offered constructive criticism of Connie Fisher, never again!! Although my observations of her voice were borne out in the end, this was on another board, and was reported to the moderator for being offensive!!

lol @ spotlight !

"As a huge Wicked fan I just have to ask, chaildcatcher, how is Wicked flawed. Personally I feel the characters, story and music are much better than Wizard of Oz and there's a lot more depth. "

who is "Chailcatcher" ? lol

To say Wicked is better than the Wizard of OZ is ridiculous. There would be no Wicked without the wizard of OZ !! are you one of the 16 year old mega fans that scream through the show ?

With less than 4 months until previews, should we be expecting a full cast announcement soon?

Firstly I'm sorry for the mistake in your name.

I never said I didn't like The Wizard of Oz but, I just prefer Wicked, to the Wizard of Oz film. As I said I feel the characters have more depth than in the Wizard of Oz and the music is better. And no I don't sit there and scream throughout the show

Did you really just say Wicked has better music? Wow.

WIZARD OF OZ

Guys seriously, two words - Broadway board.

I too happen to think that the score for Wicked is far superior to The Wizard of Oz.
#44

WIZARD OF OZ

Two words Broadway board ..... eh ?
whats that meant to mean ? sorry I'm lost.

I do like Wicked, a lot in fact, but you simply cant compare the two !

One is legendary, and will live on in the 1939 film forever.
I doubt once Wicked becomes a film if it will be as admired, loved or held so dear in generations of people's hearts as the original Wizard of OZ movie.

I mean c'mon !!! Over the Rainbow !! One of the greatest songs ever written.

Saying wicked is superior is like saying Britney is the QUEEN of pop! lol
#45

WIZARD OF OZ

I meant people were starting to be bitchy like the Broadway Board WIZARD OF OZ

I think the Wizard of Oz score is terrible...Over The Rainbow - OVERRATED!
#46

WIZARD OF OZ

I've always been a bit underwhelmed by Jeremy Sams direction....he seems only a couple of steps up from Bill Kenwright for me WIZARD OF OZ (I may not have seen him at his best thoguh)

So still undecided about going to see this...but it's great that Time Rice is writing with ALW again.

Hopefully this might lead to a something completely new?
#47

WIZARD OF OZ

Admittedly Over The Rainbow is an amazing song, but the rest of the score just feels a bit flat and uninspired to me and the Munchkinland song is just awful.

Is the marquee up yet, or is it too early?

obviously being a theatre fan, I am going to see this production, do not know the book or past musicals, it is a show I can take it or leave it, the main reason for me to go is to hear lyrics by Tim Rice IMO the best lyricist ever.
