Oddly enough, I suggested Kate Shindle for The Mad Hatter in the early thread discussing Nikki Snelson's departure from the project.
Even with such mediocre material, she'll be incredible.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
Don't know if she's been cast, but they did see Kate Shindle for the role a couple of weeks ago. They also saw Daphne Rubin-Vega (I assume also for the Hatter, don't know much about the show to know if there was another part open that she would be right for), and several other women who I didn't recognize but ranged in type between those two, so, at least as of a couple of weeks ago, it seemed as if they didn't know which direction they were going to take the role. Kate Shindle I would imagine as being much closer to Nikki Snelson's characterization, but Daphne, and the other women who were closer to her type, seems to be a pretty far departure.
As I said earlier, the role has taken a different turn. Nikki played up the humor alot, and since the Queen in this version is a dope and already "humorous," it appears they wanted someone darker.
I question if Snelson would consider not taking it because, well, I would imagine her & Nikki are friends? I know that shouldn't be a reason to, but Snelson was so enthusiasm by the project and to work with Frank Wildhorn, etc.
I never heard them asking Daphne Rubin-Vega, but it appears with Janet still essentially an unknown to even most of the Broadway community, they'd want some star power with the Hatter role. They asked quite a few people in the likes of Daphne and other more gospel, soul-y voices. I wonder how much something like "Nick of Time" has changed especially, considering it's a very disco-tech song. I don't see Shindle doing anything near Snelson's dancing. I also, and obviously quite a few, seemed thrilled to see Shindle play the Hatter. I also wonder if her costumes will be altered, since the Napoleon thing didn't really work for many.
Again, this show WILL NOT close overnight (Well, hopefully Im not jinxing it). Frank Wildhorn has enough fans to keep his shows afloat, and plenty detractors (such as Newintown) who are willing to go to Tampa and see his shows, even if they are trashing him.
Neither Kate Shindle (a fabulous performer) or Daphne Ruben-Vega (very good when she doesn't have to sing) are stars and won't bring any "star power" to any role in Frank Wildhorn's Wonderland.
In a cast with Janet Dacal, Darren Ritchie, Jose Llana and Karen Mason, and one of those names for the Hatter, they are much more recognizable. "star" was definitely the wrong word, but they aren't unknowns (Such as Dacal, Ritchie, etc) and both have their own followings. I'm not saying they'll bring huge crowds either... just they have their followings. Someone like Nikki Snelson has her random followings and it seems plenty went to see her in it.
