Complete casting has been announced for Walmartopia, a hit at the 2006 New York International Fringe Festival that will begin an open-ended run at the Minetta Lane Theatre Aug. 21 with an official opening Sept. 3.
Directed by Daniel Goldstein with choreography by Wendy Seyb, the cast will boast Cheryl Freeman and Nikki M. James as the mother and daughter who are at the center of this lampoon of the corporate giant. The company will also feature Sarah Bolt, Bradley Dean, Stephen DeRosa, John Jellison, Brennen Leath, Andrew Polk, Pearl Sun, Scotty Watson and Helene Yorke. Watson plays the the late Wal-Mart founder, Sam Walton.
Walmartopia The Musical! features a book by Catherine Capellaro and a score by Andrew Rohn. The musical, according to press notes, "tells the hilarious and timely tale of Vicki Latrell, a single mom and Wal-Mart employee who speaks out against her company's working conditions and finds herself and her young daughter jettisoned to 2036, into a future where Wal-Mart dominates the entire world."
The design team comprises David Korins (sets), Miranda Hoffman (costumes), Ben Stanton (lights), Tony Smolenski & Walter Trarbach (sound) and Erin Kennedy Lunsford (hair, wig and make-up design). August Eriksmoen is music Supervisor. Leading Light, LLC and Outside the Big Box Productions, LLC are producing the Off-Broadway engagement.
Show times are Tuesdays-Saturdays at 8 PM, Sundays at 7 PM with matinees Saturdays and Sundays at 3 PM. Tickets, priced $45 and $65, are available by calling (212) 307-4100 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.

Posted: 7/23/07 at 9:41pmI will not lie, instead of keeping my nice front row seat, I moved to the last row of the theatre so no one could see me.

Posted: 7/24/07 at 8:58amWhat's bad about it? The story, the music, cast, or everything? Sounds kinda interesting.

Posted: 7/24/07 at 10:18amThe cast was okay. The only real standout was the woman who played Vicki. It was everything else that was awful. They took what could have been a really good satire and made it look and sound stupid.

Oh c'mon, it wasn't awful and it wasn't stupid. Silly, yes - with dancing smiley faces and time traveling severed heads - but not stupid.
It must have some artistic merits, or else it wouldn't be coming back to NYC.
