If you knew all the things I did when I was a starving artist (ok, this is definitely an invitation for dirty jokes...)...
And I'm fine about it.
I think starving artists have license to do things to further their education that "regular" people don't...i.e. - sneaking into shows, movies, etc.
Judge all you want, every performer I can think of did it and/or does it if they're poor. And why not? I hate the money system we have in this country anyway.
Moral relativism, I know...

I guess the phrase "personal honor" is meaningless? And since when is being poor a justification for theft? My guess is that you are hardly Jean Valjean stealing bread for your starving family. And if you are sneaking into shows and movies and not paying library fines, you are stealing from the very arts community you apparently long to be a part of. Just saying....
I was talking about when I was a teenager and had almost nothing. I have no justification anymore for stealing anything, and I don't...although, again, I think the way our money system is set up is pretty much just plain evil.
And it's also this thing called REALITY I was talking about -- which is that starving artists do things like that ALL THE TIME. Period.
And I think it's fine for starving artists to further their education by sneaking into plays. When I was poor, I was "walked into" MANY Broadway shows by friends who directed them or who were in the cast...Is that stealing? Technically, absolutely. They were breaking the rules...they were fine with it...and it's cool if you're not...
Support the super-rich capitalists 24/7, if you call that "honor." I don't. But, my career has yielded me plenty, so I pay for everything, as I said.
p.s. - If the greed class won't feed you or give you health-care and you are poor and can't "afford" it, it IS a justification for stealing it. But, hey, I don't believe in greed as a super wonderful value. I believe in love and sharing and giving...
I find this thread somewhat amusing as the "conservatives" are the ones trying to delay, skirt, worm around their responsibilities.
If the policy is you can't watch the videos because owe a fine.. you don't get to watch the video. Period. You aren't entitled to a different set of rule.
It is not up to the library to make it EASY for you to pay the fine. You walked in and check out the material and you need to walk in and return it. Or if you are miles away.. put in a package and send it to the return desk of the library, that way you minimize the fines incurred.
As for paying.. just because there isn't a online method doesn't make it impossible. I love how the mind simply stopped attempting to find alternatives when you found you couldn't press a couple buttons to solve the problem. As if letters to the head librarian and money orders were just too labor intensive to even contemplate.
And...wait.. isn't a public library a SOCIALIST institution? Why are conservatives even patronizing such a place.. let alone working for one?
Why should the public pay for YOU to borrow materials and not return them by the agreed upon date? Why should the public pay for you to borrow materials at all? Capitalism should solve all your needs and wants, right? If you need a book or video, you BUY it; not borrow it on the dime of the public.
I can see how conservatives might start a "rental" system for books and video.. but not a publicly funded one. Sort of like BLOCKBUSTER for books.
I ramble.
But as a left-wing, commie, pinko I just find it all so amusing.
Almira, you're hysterical, in a good way.

My favorite part is the "to further their education" rationalization.
Let me make sure I have this clear.
People who categorize themselves as "starving artists" get to do things that other people don't.
Is that pretty much it?
Nope.

It sure reads that way. Could it be you're being unclear?
I guess I misunderstood "I think starving artists have license to do things to further their education that "regular" people don't."
I'm sorry to hear you can't understand what I wrote and left out part of what I wrote.
To put it in logic terms, you took a very specific set of circumstances I wrote about and then illogically generalized it to something I neither wrote nor implied.
Sorry, another thing I'm guilty of is studying logic in college...darn it all...
I'm honestly trying to understand. What part did I leave out that changed your meaning?
I'm honestly not trying to explain...sorry.
p.s. - You are not one of the people on here that are clearly mentally ill, and I have no problem with you, so nothing personal.

"Sorry, another thing I'm guilty of is studying logic in college...darn it all..."
My guess is it wasn't your strongest subject.
Then I'm going to stick with my assessment of your meaning. Sorry.
And I disagree with it.
I understand what Jasons trying to say here.
And can we Puh-Leaze not turn this into another thread bashing this poor man?

This poor man has done nothing but bring it on himself.

Intelligence is something clearly ridiculed in our culture. The most intelligent people are not supposed to ever mention it. When they do, they are abused and insulted.
But because you asked, actually I test in the top 0.5% of IQs. This means that in a room of 200 people, I'm likely to have the fastest computing power of everyone...
Also, I missed exactly ONE question on the logic section of the LSAT; I missed ZERO on the reading comprehension section of that test. That would put me in probably the top 0.5 to 0.1% of people who take that test.
And I scored 114% in my University Logic class. I also scored over 100%, with extra credit, in my statistics class. And because I don't "guess," but know some readers don't know what statistics courses are about -- mostly, they are about critical thinking and errors most people make while making inferences or deductions about things.
I see those kinds of errors are quite common on these message boards. And that's cool. It's amusing, sad, and just fine...
Who wants to go watch a Lincoln Center video with me tomorrow? I'll tell them I'm doing a research paper on scamming libraries so I need to watch AIDA.

Are you starving? You should hold up Gristedes on your way.
Jordan, thank you. But, as I said before, I'm quite fine with the personal attacks and blatant lies. It reflects so poorly on the posters, makes them look so unbelievably bad (and actually mentally ill, to quote some bway friends who have written me), has no effect on my reputation or career except, I think, to help it...even though I'm not here to help it...

Suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrre you're not.
We believe you.
Really we do.
And artists ARE special people, just the way YOU'RE so special, Jason. Demonstrably special. Special with very different needs from ordinary people. Different in a way that means they get to live by different rules than the hoi polloi.

All this back and forth over some crudely shot videos. It makes my head spin. I have to go lie down.
