Exactly! The songs were so much fun, but at some points during the show, I nearly burst out laughing just from some of the terrible dialogue! I nearly lost it when they started saying that Queen put magical spells on the hidden guitar. Yes, apparently Queen was not JUST a band, but were also sorcerers. Lord. That had me laughing for quite a while!
In theory, I think the show could have been good if they'd made the book less cheesy and tacky. The whole concept of the plot reminded me of 1984...only on drugs....massive amounts of drugs...
It struck me as very odd that Bohemian Rhapsody, one of Queen's most theatrical pieces, was relegated to a post-curtain call encore. Naming the two main characters Galileo and Scaramouche you'd think they were going to work this mini-opera into the narrative, but they didn't. THAT is how inept the book is. New York critics would massacre this show.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Queen will be in the show tomorrow during Bohemian Rhapsody
