Maybe DRS should have Hired Donny Osmond.
I will miss DRS.
It is a great show.
All involved should be congratulated!

Posted: 8/18/06 at 1:18amCan I buy out the tickets for the L.A. leg of the tour and hope that those sales transcend my love for the Broadway production?

Posted: 8/18/06 at 1:25amBuying a ticket in LA will help the show move towards recovering costs, but its not going to keep the show from closing September 3rd in NYC.

yeah guys, although I'd like Sweeney and DRS to be included among those shows mentioned in this thread, they've seen their time, unfortunatley.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 1:55amI don't mind Sweeney closing, as long as they do the tour they announced. I really would like to take some people here to see the show. I think if other smaller shows like Bee and Altar Boyz can tour, then Sweeney should be fine.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 6:29amCity Of Angels in London took down their closing notice and managed to run a few weeks longer than planned (though still flopped pretty badly)

Speaking of London, didn't We Will Rock You post a closing notice and pull it shortly after? I could be mistaken, but I think I heard that story a few months ago.

Yeah We Will Rock You posted notices for October 7th 2006 but now is booking to October 2007.
The Producers in London has posted notices but has been linked with a possible transfer.
Id imagine Wedding Singer will fold by the end of the year or at the start, hate to say it but i think perhaps, like the jupebox musicals, the era of film-to-stage adaptations are coming to and end, which isnt making me think Legally Blonde will run for a huge amount of time.
I hope DRS still plans London.

I don't think you can really generalize like that. I mean, this past year's tony winner was a jukebox musical.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 1:28pmThe original Off Broadway run of The Fantasticks...it became a running joke...I think it was their way of generating box office. It happened so often in the last 5-6 years of the run.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 1:50pmand there are several movie-to-musical adaptations in the wings. you could have made the same statement about the trend ending 7 years ago when Footloose and Saturday Night Fever did so poorly, but look how many we've had since then. They have as good a track record as any other source of new musicals -- they aren't going anywhere.

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE advertised "Final 16 performances" in the summer of 1985, but the box office picked up and they signed Mandy Patinkin to return to the title role, so that closing notice came down and the showe played until mid-October that year.
When it was announced CATS was closing business picked up and allowed trhem to extend a few months.
There were rumours something like that would happen with Toronto's LOTR, but it seems that show will also close for good on Sep 3.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I remember there was major consideration that beauty and the Beast would close soon after 9/11...I think it was going to be the first week of October.
Also, Kiss Me, Kate, was going to close the Sunday following 9/11, but they were able to extend through December of 2001.

Shows that are playing to marginal business (make a little one week, lose that little the next) often keep a closing notice posted from week to week in case the bottom falls out of the box office and looks like it is going to stay fallen.
Inishmore could well have its one week notice up to the cast and crew, but as long as it comes down before half-hour four performances from the posted closing performance, the notice is rescinded. Of course, another closing notice is probably put up as soon as the other comes down.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 3:33pmNow that Spring Awakening has announced the O'Neill on November 17, Sweeney isn't extending. And considering that High Fidelity begins in November, DRS isn't staying longer.

Posted: 8/18/06 at 4:04pmI believe, correct me if I'm wrong, that Chorus Line, Cats, Les Miserable, and Miss Saigon extended their runs after issuing a closing notice. I believe it was because of the large demand for tickets by people who realize it's now or never.
