"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell

so sad...I still remember seeing Uncommon Women one Saturday afternoon on television in the seventies and crying and laughing. I've been a fan as long as I've been a fan of Sondheim's...and she was so funny and smart when interviewed. I'll miss her...
Rest in Peace, Wendy!

I was in a production of The Heidi Chronicles last year. A touching play.
Very saddened by this news. She was still writing, too. Who knew what treasures she had left. Doesn't matter now, though. My prayers are with her daughter, mother, and the rest of her family.
RIP Wendy.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

The second thing I ever directed was a short play she wrote called "Tender Offer". Such a great playwright.

Just here to thank Wendy for giving me my first professional credit on Broadway as the voice of the sons in An American Daughter. Her casting me led to me recognizing her work and becoming a huge fan. I will always be grateful to her and know that her work lives on.

A month ago in Boston, I saw the Huntington's production of The Sisters Rosensweig and really enjoyed it. It was my first introduction to the wonder that is Wendy Wasserstein.

I regret to say that I am completely unfamiliar with her work, though I've heard her name mentioned before. What a shame, indeed.

This kind of makes all the little spats here meaningless.
A shame that we lost Wendy & August Wilson so quickly. A true theatrical talent has passed. My condolences & prayers are with her family

That's so sad
I was in "Uncommon Women" over the summer (Mrs. Plumm). It was one of the most amazing straight shows I've ever done.
She was an incredible gift to the theatre community, and I'm sure she'll be missed.
