The only category that I considered to be a slight upset based on what people were expecting was ScarJo taking the Best Featured Actress in a Play category. Were any of the other categories really upsets?

I really thought that Molina would win. But that was always neck and neck so I don't think it qualifies as an "upset".

Twitter seemed quite outraged that Supporting Actor in a Musical didn't go to de Jesus or Steggert, but I'm not sure there will be much in the way of outpourings of rage on these boards this year. Which is something of a relief! XD

I think Viola Davis may have been considered one due to people thinking she have been in featured category. I didn't really think of it as one.

There were a few categories that could almost be "too close to call" anyway.

No, that is not what an upset is.

An upset would have been Douglas Hodge losing to Sean Hayes.

Everyone predicted Viola Davis in all the critic picks that I saw. She was much a lock as Hodge I think.

I consider myself a discriminating NYC theatergoer, and get great pleasure from my theatergoing habit. "Orphans Home Cycle", "Clybourne Park", "Chad Deity", and "My Wonderful Day" were among my top picks last season, opinions shared by many theater critics, and yet none of them was honored or even acknowledged at the Tonys.

The Tonys are to the best NYC theater what the Oscars are to quality film-making - perfectly irrelevant.

My stomach was upset this morning because of the entire bottle of wine I drank while watching the Tonys. Count?

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

Shouldn't a "discriminating theatrgoer" know that that Tonys are awards for Broadway theatre only? The shows you listed were all off-Broadway.

Whatsiscutie from MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET was literally the only surprise of the evening. I imagine Steggart and De Jesus cancelled each other out.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Levi was the favorite to win though. All of the critics predicted him. So that's not really an upset.

Neither Brantley or Isherwood predicted him. But yes, a majority of pundits/critics did predict Kreis. Updated On: 6/14/10 at 12:33 PM

you really frustrate the feck out of me. you are so condescending. read my post again and to why i said "i think".... i didn't say i agreed with it, am aware of the critical acclaim and said nothing about critics. when it was first posted on here there were many many posts stating "they should have put her in featured, she may not win now" or that the lock had changed...go back and read them.

So if Sean Hayes won i would have been an upset? really??!! you're kidding. *eyeroll

Upsets? Non really.

A few awards that I felt should have gone to different nominees, but generally played out as expected.

I really wish that ONLY musicals with original scores be eligible for the BEST MUSICAL award. Jukebox shows, rock album retreads and such should be in the (restored) THEATRICAL EVENT category.

Given that MEMPHIS was the only truly original musical this season, did anyone expect aanything different?

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
