Posted: 2/19/07 at 9:33pmIt seemed that after the initial announcement, nothing has come to fruition. I'd love to see a revival of this, much more than one of Grease.

Posted: 2/19/07 at 9:34pmI would love to see a revival of WEST SIDE STORY, however I doubt it would be a financial success. But if the show is in fact to make a return, I would hope that someone other than Jerry Mitchell is brought on. He's a fine choreographer, but I'd just like to see someone with a little more originality take on this show.

Maybe someone can persuade Michael Bennet to do it.
Oh, really? He's totally booked? He can't?
I know! Lets go for the second best thing: Wayne Cilento.

Posted: 2/19/07 at 9:36pmI don’t think that Jerry Mitchell is the best choice for choreographer. West side story requires a different style than what he usually does.

Posted: 2/19/07 at 9:52pmAll major revivals featuring Jerome Robbins' choreography need to re-create his choreography though some additional choreography is allowed. Mitchell was assistant to Robbins during Jerome Robbins' Broadway and he already re-created the Gypsy choreography for the 2003 revival so he'll likely be involved with the revival if it even happens.

Remember Baz Luhrmann's Broadway Bohème?

I liked him in that...I have now disowned him.

Tony- Matt Morrison.
Maria- Natalie Cortez- if she has the soprano... which I think she does...
Anita- Ruthie Henshall... or Donna Murphy... they'd both have to be Ricaned up... but they could kick ****.
Bernardo- Aaron Lazar-again... ricaned up...
Riff- ...some young unknown kid?
Chino- Jai... but... not gay.
Baby John- AKB

I think if they do a revival they should actually use teenagers under 20. I find that I usually enjoy high school productions of the show more than regional producitons because of the sheer energy and passion tennagers put into it. There is a certain raw quality that works for the show, and the usual overly trained triple threats make the show glossy and heartless.
I realize that casting this way can be expensive, but I think it is well worth it.

Posted: 2/19/07 at 11:49pmI know that the North Carolina School of the Arts is doing a 50th aniversery run of the show with one of the few people authorized to replicate Robbin's choreography, and Gerald Freeman, who was an Directorial Assistant on the original production.

OK, Ruthie Henshall and Donna Murphy would be killer Anitas if Victor Garber played Riff, Raul Julia came back from the dead to play Bernardo, and Olympia Dukakis played Maria.
Sorry for the sarcasm but they're about 20-30 years too old for the role.
Natalie Cortez is too old for Maria as well, she might be of age for Anita though and the role will let her show off her dancing skills and stop the show with "America."
