Sam Mendes has announced that he is in the final stages of the development of his next stage production.
It is to be a new stage musical of 'Willie Wonka And The Chocolate Factory'.
He is to produce and direct the venture which has 'Hairspray's writers, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman providing the music and lyrics.
Michael Ball has been approached and a large West End theatre is being sought for a mid 2011 opening.

This has been screaming out to be a stage show, but MB as Wonka? hmmm not seeing it myself

YES! thishas the potential to be a fantastic venture. its going to be a HUGE challenge...but if anyone can do it Mendes can.

Not sure who MB will play though.... perhaps you're right mama the fat kid who eats everything.... or perhaps he'll play all the oompa loompa's

There are many other Roald Dahl books that are screaming to be musicalised. Why choose one and adapt it for the third (fourth if you count the opera) time? It has had an opera and 2 movies made (both of which could be considered musicals).

Matilda is much more adept for adaptation, I think.

Oh well - at least it's Shaiman doing the songs!
