Posted: 5/31/09 at 10:30pmI loved the '94 revival of Showboat, but I'm not too sure about a revival at this point in time.

Posted: 5/31/09 at 10:45pmWell, the Show Boat revival closed like 13 years ago. And it was very well loved and admired. It would be a waste of time to do another one so soon when the '95 is so fresh in people's memories.

Posted: 5/31/09 at 11:05pmWell all of this is true. I think the major reason for there not having been a revival yet was because of the Hal Prince version. But I mean, we are seeing revivals of Guys and Dolls and Gypsy, which had runs on B-way not too long ago (especially Gypsy.) I think just to hear new talent sing that score would be thrilling. I think Kelli O'Hara or Sierra Boggess would be a wonderful Magnolia. Who as Ravenal? Brian D'Arcy James? Patrick Wilson?

No.
That last one was wonderful,
and we have other fish to fry.

Posted: 5/31/09 at 11:12pmI loved the last revival! It is an expensive show though. I'd love to see another production, but I have a feeling we'll have to wait a few more years.

My first show I ever saw, and still one of my favorites. *Proceeds to listen to revival recording and the brilliance of jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein* Sheer perfection.
While I'd love to see the show again, it hasn't been away long enough to justify a new production with the revival still somewhat fresh in people's minds.
Also, I'd much rather get that Brigadoon revival back on track instead of another revival of Show Boat.

Posted: 6/1/09 at 12:51amI do agree too that Brigadoon would be wonderful. Another beautiful score. Who would like to see cast Musikman? In Show Boat or Brigadoon?

Posted: 6/1/09 at 9:32amI am very much looking forward to seeing what Signature Theatre will do with Show Boat ... and in particular which, if any, of the changes made for the Prince revival will be used.

Posted: 6/1/09 at 4:05pmBut which version of Show Boat would you revive? There's quite a few. Or you could create your own amalgamation, I suppose.

Why settle for an "amalgamation"? Start from scratch. Get rid of that trite score and write one of your own.
I mean, do today's audiences really want to sit through piffle like "Only Make Believe"?
I ask you!

There was a concert version of "Show Boat" recently, but the singers were awful, especially Nathan Gunn, who sang Ravenal's songs like they were written by Verdi rather than Kern. Despite the fact that "Show Boat" had its last revival a decade ago it deserves to revived again and again, if only to remind today's audiences of how relevant a musical written nearly a century ago can be, not to mention entertaining. SHOW BOAT still has a far superior score and story than 90 per cent of today's musicals and the only obstacle might be that, with very few exceptions, we don't have any singers on stage or in films good enough to do justice to the score. In all honesty though, I would rather see a definitive faithful film adaptation of "Show Boat" instead of a stage revival. None of the 3 previous versions is ideal and the last one was over 50 years ago.
My dream cast for a revival (or film) within say the next couple of years is:
Julie: LAURA BENTANI or TAMMY BLANCHARD
Magnolia: KELLI O'HARA
Ravenal: JAMES ANEST
Queenie: AUDRA McDONALD
Joe: BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL
Ellie: KRISTIN CHENOWETH
Frank: NEIL PATRICK HARRIS
Cap'n Andy: CHRISTOPHER WALKEN
Parthy: KATHLEEN TURNER
Kim: LAURA BELL BUNDY

Posted: 6/1/09 at 6:48pmI seem to recall there was considerable upheaval from the Afro-Amercan /Canadian community w the "portrayal" of those characters in the show. Not sure a producer would want to stir that pot again esp as there would be very limited ways of adapting the source material to a more "PC" version wout damaging the story .
