I definitely think that Eden is mixing. There's no way she could be belting that out every night. Mixing is healthier, and you can make it sound identical to a belt with practice. It's the best way to go if you want to keep your voice.
Justice, SWV had 3 Studio CD's "It's About Time" (An R&B Classic), "New Beggining" and "Release Some Tension." That was one of my favorite groups back in the day. You see I had to change my avatar now. In middle school we had to create a country and our national anthem was to the tune of the "Anything" Remix! Also, the Coko song didn't introduce Eve. She had a song on the Bulworth soundtrack, the Girlfriend/Boyfriend song with Janet J. and Blackstreet. Her big break was with "You got Me" w/ The Roots. But I definitly agree that that Coko's solo Cd was SLEPT ON MAJORLY. Probably due to her poor choice of singles. "Sunshine" was kinda sappy and irritating and "Triflin" was a type of song that had already been done to death by TLC and Destiny's Child (Scrubs and Bills, Bills, Bills) I saw her in a play about 2 years ago. The played was based around Babyface's songbook. COKO blew the roof off of Brandy's "Sittin Up In My Room." The audience gave her a lot of love because she was singing great and it looked effortless.
Yes, I do consider mixing a form of belting. It's much more healthy and healthier sounding.
Lea Salonga has such a pure voice and tone. Yeah, I think I'd consider her to be a belter. And a fabulous one at that. Belting doesn't always mean hitting a high G#, which Ms. Salonga definitely does not and should not have to do.
But o, what about Jennifer Holliday? "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" anyone? Utterly fantastic.

yeah...soprano belt/mix is what a lot of people use-it's safer
I think Lea Salonga and Sutton use that more I think
When your soprano is that strong it's hard to tell!
*that's what I'm working on in lessons since i just chest voice belt-not that great for an undeveloped/matured soprano*

To tell what "belting" (mixing) is, it is best to examine those who don't do it very well. Best example I can think of is to compare those who do it well (Merman, Morrow, Espenoza,White,Menzell, etc etc etc) to Sarah Jessica Parker on the last Broadway recording of "Once Upon A Matress". This is pure chest and essentially "yelling".
I kinda think Idina doesn't mix...which is partly why she has some trouble on the top notes of defy gravity...
i've heard my voice teacher say he's suprised she still has a voice..there is a lot of tension in her neck and sometimes it sounds like she's yelling
*note: i'm not bashing I love love love Idina..just my opinion*

She is mixing. The support may not be right or the tensions may be a bit extreme, this is probably what your voice teacher ment. On one could possibly NOT mix in the regesters in which she sings.
i've hit those notes in a non mix...and then got yelled at by my voice teacher cuz he could tell i did it..lol
Truth - All My Lovin' is such an amazing song, as is I Ain't Feelin' You. I like that she worked with Jerkins, but hate that it was so poorly promoted.

also only CERTAIN people can belt well and correctly...u cant just teach ppl...they have to have that kind of voice...
I think Patti LuPone has one of the best belts ever. She never sounds like she is straining and she can belt into the stratosphere. Sutton also has an amazing belt with no auduble break from her chest to head voice. Idina is a yeller which is why she is always cracking and flat. I like her, but she is not a belter.
Yeah, Idina does not have a healthy belt at all. I don't think she's mixing, I call that yelling.

It's fascinating to ME and to lots of people, considering I am a grown man and I'm singing almost identically to a female. Don't get snappy with me.
I've seen Idina perform live numerous times over the last nine years with nary a flat note, crack, or yell so I know it does not "always" occur. I would call that singing.
HeyMrMusic...Ms. Menzel's belt is healthy. Once in a while she takes a misstep, but nothing she does on a regular basis or many of the numerous times I've seen her live would constitute as "yelling." True, she does not mix. She's probably one of the few who can hit a high G without mixing.
Justice--I pretty much liked everything on the CD except the singles. My favorites were "You and Me" and "So Hard To Say Goodbye." I wonder what Coko is up to now. SWV's breakup didn't go to good. With Xscape returning maybe they will get it together as well. Coko could follow all the other popstars to broadway and I wouldn't be mad.
