Why am I reminded of Amadeus?

JoeKv...that's brilliant. Arthur is totally the Salieri to Robbins's and Bernstein's Mozarts.

Sorry, Mr. Colace. You've been replaced.
And you're now *Abrasive *Ineffectual *popper-flavored.

No, no I don't think that's why it popped into my head, but I just can't put my finger on it. After all, Amadeus is about a nobody who becomes consumed with bitterness because a man he finds personally abhorrent has been blessed with a magnificent talent. Salieri sits in his own personal hell, stewing, knowing he will never achieve anything close to what Mozart has produced again and again and again telling everyone how undeserving this genius is. Salieri's jealousy is so very unattractive that you can't even feel sorry for him- this nobody with his nose pressed against the glass, peering in at the true talent.
But for the life of me, I can't imagine why that popped into my head at this time.

Perhaps a tad Biblical- 'Job on the Dungheap' by Jan Lievens.
Re-titled 'Arthur's Career'
Perhaps. Just a tad.
But Salieri recognized his own mediocrity. Laurents thinks he's been amazing sperm to worm.

No, Laurents is absolutely the Mozart here- A Tony, an Oscar and he's been involved with several of the most lauded and revered stage works of the 20th century- his name and work will be well known after all of us are dead.

Cut the frabba-jabba!
I'm sure there's an abortion clinic somewhere on the west side that could use his namesake.
Arthur Laurents = Mozart.
Gotcha.
