What about Rosie!

Posted: 11/6/03 at 9:01amDid the drag queens at Stonewall know how to spell "opinion?" In my opinion, some of them might have, some might not. But not making typos has never been a requirement for throwing bricks. Especially at witless non-entities who avoid the substance of what a smart person has to say. And to think, a parasitical name borrower had the nerve to criticize anonymous posting!

Thank you for your carefully considered post. Orion.
While I do think that a lot of the Rosie-bashing has to do with her rotten reputation with people who have worked with her, always keep in mind that the right-wing, homophobic POST is going after her with a blatantly undisguised glee. So I wouldn't totally rule out the homophobic element.

I agree that homophobia plays a part in the bashing that she gets in the media and in general. I think some of the people who became fans of her tv show would have preferred that she remain in the closet and feel betrayed that she came out and shattered their ability to deny that she is a lesbian.
However, on this board, in the posts that I have read, I haven't heard anyone say that her sexual orientation is an issue. It may very well be for some people here but, they are not openly saying it. So as a person who does not care for her, it bothers me to have someone come along and say that homophobia is the only reason that negative comments are being posted. As a gay man, I want to see lesbians and other gay men become successful in a public way. It gives all of us more credibility. I just wish it were someone who is as intelligent, as strong but nicer to the people with whom she has deal. Like I said, I think it would be interesting to see if ether would be a vast difference in the comments if it were an out lesbian who has a different type of reputation. If it were someone like Ellen or k d Lang who were backing a show, the feelings toward them might be more positive

Posted: 11/6/03 at 9:32amI do think some of the posts about Rosie that some of the younger gay members have posted is fairly blatant misogyny and lesbian baiting. You know, when you spend a lot of time talking about scrawny muscle twinks as your only reference for beauty, it probably comes trippingly off your typing fingers when you criticize somebody for being a big, fat, whatever. Unfortunately, it's hard to unpack the misogyny and lesbianphobia out of the discussion.

dollypoop: i find it ironic you are all bashing rosie for having opinions. by that standard, you are all horrible people and no one should support anything you attempt just based on the fact you have expressed your opinions.
papa: it is instructive to look at the substance of the thread before allowing yourself to project your anger over other things to those who are undeserving of such bile. while i understand that in some quarters ms. o'donnell has been attacked for having opinions, the general tone of this thread was more about the general overhype, the fact that rosie is literally everywhere you turn lately.
dollypoop: rosie has done more for new york actors and actresses than all of you combined- she featured Broadway on her show and helped pump thousands of dollars into theatre box offices. what have you done?
papa: i think brdwythtr was rather eloquent on this topic. but again, i have seen repeated references on every board that i've been to about the fact that rosie was a tireless supporter of broadway theatre. that was never in dispute.
dollypoop: if you don't like her because she's a lesbian- get over it. if you don't like the fact she literally puts her money where her mouth is- go produce your own shows and do please let us know when they are so we can write disheartening, personal attacks on you and your shows before they even start. because you know, maybe I won't like it. and then I can attempt to share my knowledge and try to feel more powerful by writing bitchy, distorted posts anonymously.
papa: the pot and the kettle and the blackness issue aside regarding anonymity, have you ever been to a theatre message board? so one or two people out of the multitude of posters here have made disparaging comments with regard to weight, looks, or sexual preference. do we call for the hanging of all of the posters? by the same rationale, since i am a man and some men have committed rapes, am i a rapist? i have also read several posts that have congratulated her for putting her own money into a show, but please, does this insulate her from speculation regarding her show? does the fact that she is a woman and a lesbian and a former television star who's been a proponent of broadway buy her a free pass from any and all negativity? if so, warm up the knife because i'm ready to lose mr. happy and slap on a pair of sensible shoes! if ms. o'donnell were so concerned about her image she would be more careful in how she allows herself to be seen and portrayed. follow the court case and listen to her admissions, a lot of people find the when one refuses to display sensitivity towards others, one in return deserves none. that old golden rule thingamabob.
dollypoop: you want to have an opinion? great! what would be even better would be if you had the courage to make your real identity known- to put your self-esteem on the line to be ridiculed, criticized and attacked because people have nothing better to do.
papa: see above reference re: pot, kettle, blackness
dollypoop: i am not revealing my name yet....but rest assured I will. and I doubt you will have the guts to do the same al, namo, dolly, et al.
papa: well, i must admit that i don't think i can leave the board now. i'll have to stay here constantly refreshing the board because i cannot wait to see who you are, oh poopiness. please, you come in here and attack people and with your foolish scattergun assault tear down people who probably agree with you. she can do without supporters like you who have no sense of humor or scale. go back to boise, honey, the adults (and i include you in that bwaytheatre11) are having a conversation.
yeah i know, too long and a bit boring, but i was mad, dagnabbit.

Posted: 11/6/03 at 10:42amPapa, do preach. I hope you have better response to your long explanatory posts than I have had. This is the part where the folks you disagree with say something like :::yawn::: or :::blah, blah, blah::: or :::I'm not going to bother even reading that post, it's too long:::. Of course that just means you made a point or 12 they can't refute.

One other thing I'd like to point out to the Pooper. Some of us HAVE made our identities known. And have no problem with that.
Others have not. WHO THE HELL CARES???

Like I said, there were probably posts that I missed. Since I tend to skip over posts by people who usually make no sense or tend to add nothing to a topic, I hadn't seen the "fat" or anti lesbian comments. Those would be exactly the type of posts I would choose not to read because I find them ridiculous.
So, I stand corrected. There may be more homophobia and/or youth and beauty worship on this board than I knew about.
Don't be too hard on the young twink lovers, Namo. We were all there once. I remeber a time when I thought I would never be able to find someone over the eldery age of 30 attractive.

You stated your opinion eloquently and coherently.
If I do not agree with all your opinions, I laud you for having them and writing a post it was a pleasure to read.

So if I'll be your bodyguard, you can be my long-lost pal? You can call me Betty, and when I call you, I can call you Al.
