The Yanks can thank Grady Little for leaving Pedro in too long.

Thanks Grady. For all you Bosox fans, you have my sympathies. From a Yankee fan, you guys are really overdue & deserve to win it one day soon.

What can I say- I live in hell (aka Connecticut)... you would not believe the level of bitterness here. I used to laugh it off, until I faced the ugliness at Fenway... the hatred of some of these people is way beyond a friendly rivalry. I grew up in California, where I rooted for the Dodgers but no one took it too seriously.

Fortunately I'm going into NY tomorrow to see 'Retreat From Moscow', and hopefully I'll be able to find a friendly place to toast the AL champs. And if all else fails, I have tix for 'Nobody Don't Like Yogi' with Ben Gazzara in a couple of weeks!

As far as where the money for those t-shirts is going, I guess I'm not as trusting as the rest of you... :)

How can you have a 'World Series' with only one country involved? I don't get it. Shouldn't there be other nations involved? Please explain. Updated On: 10/19/03 at 08:03 AM

I ask the same question. I guess they think it is a world series since there are canadian teams and some players from other countries as well. Beats me I think there should be other countries involved too.

Who else thinks more teams should play??? Let us know, thanks!!

As I see it, the problem with the Yankees is that they don't have any good-looking men on their team. They lost their two hunks (Paul O'Neill and Scott Brosius), while the Mets have retained Mike Piazza (the VO) and Al Leiter. To my way of thinking, that makes the Mets a better team.

Let's Go MARLINS!!!!!!!!!

#34Why the World Series really is the World Series
Posted: 10/19/03 at 9:32pm

The United States is perhaps the only country in the world where professional baseball is not linked to nationalism. Baseball is extremely popular in Japan, Korea, Mexico, The Dominican Republic and Cuba, but all of those countries set limits as to how many foreign players may be hired by each team. Major League Baseball may have all its teams based in North America (it would be financially impossible to have teams all over the world) but their salaries are far greater than anyplace else and each team has scouts all over the world trying to sign the best talent no matter what their nationality. There's no other place in the world where baseball is played at this high a level with jobs open to anyone regardless of nationality, and as a result teams in so-called American baseball have the most international diversity in the world.

And in case you didn't know -- when the Yankees win a home game they play Sinatra's recording of "New York, New York" over the loudspeaker. When they lose a game they play Liza's recording of the song. That's reason enough to want them to lose.

Thanks for the info Olives...especially about which version of New York, New York is played and why. I never knew that.

They just showed some celebrities at the game. I caught Jason Patric...he is a doll.

Couldn't you have a 'World Series' with players from other countries (Japan, Korea, Canada) playing for their country of origin?

We Beat the Redsox and we'll Beat the Marlins too!

Ha ha Maggie- glad someone understands. I guess the lack of sleep (these endless rounds of playoffs games going till midnight!) and constant bickering at work have gone to my brain- I actually got booed in a meeting last Friday for wearing a Yankees shirt- so I'm a little on edge!

It was great being in the city on Saturday- we went into Modell's Sporting Goods on 42nd St. and the place was packed- we picked up a couple of 'The Curse Lives' shirts. And as far as the better-looking team- what about Jeter, Giambi, Aaron Boone (if you overlook the 2 errors last night?). I can definitely say the Sox are the saddest looking bunch in the majors- and as if things weren't bad enough, they all went and got buzz-cuts! Talk about curse! As far as it being a 'world series', I've always thought that was a ridiculous name for it- it's not like the 'World Cup' in soccer, where you actually have teams representing different countries. I saw a show on (I think) ESPN classic last night about the beginnings of the series in the early 1900's, and someone (can't remember who- too tired) had the bright idea of calling it the 'world' series because where else but in the US would they ever play baseball?

I noticed them playing Liza's version of 'NY, NY' when they lose just this year- I don't know if that's a new thing or not- I know they've played Frankie's version when they win for quite a while. Ain't nothing better than singing along with Frankie after a game at the stadium!

Don't really post here much, but I usually check in several times a day. I'm a little torn with the series this year. Having grown up surrounded with everything Yankees, because of my brother, I've always been partial to them. They're playing the Marlins, whose manager Jack McKeon is my cousin's husband's cousin. I'm really excited for him, since this is the first World Series he's ever gotten to in all his years of managing. So, I pretty much watched both games rooting for both teams. I'm sure that's illegal somewhere.

I hung out with Cheyenne Jackson in his dressing room waayyyyyy before he tickled D2.

I don't think it's illegal, I just think that you'll be happy no matter which team wins the series. So that's actually a bonus for you that you really have no emotional attachment to the series.
I'm still trying to catch up on all the sleep I missed last week.

Looks like the Yankees are not going to make it this year. Looks like the Marlins will come out on top. Watch out for Mt Steinbrenner to blow. Wells back spasm may have cost him his last shot of being resigned & that will be a pivotal point of the series.

I'm tired of the Yankees just as much as you are, but your logic is a bit funny. The losing team of the World Series STILL beat the Red Sox black and blue.

MasterLcz - Yankees are epected to win every year therefore they came up short. I was quite happy with what my Red Sox did this year. They weren't even suppose to come this close to the WS. The only thing that kept us out was idiocy on the part of our manager. Both teams lost and to me being the second loser is no better than being the third.

Bulldog - You bet I LOVE NYC! Of course it would be a very cool place to live. I wouldn't change my allegiance if I ever moved to NYC. You can love NYC but hate the Yanks. There are many of us out there.

Interesting note - The old Red Sox GM who was let go two years ago spent the fall persuing his new passion...theatre. He starred in a local theatre's rendition of Damn Yankees...how fitting!
