How about Watch What Happens from Newsies :) I love that song. It's about writing too.

If you're making an original musical, shouldn't you be writing your own songs?
Andrew Lippa's oeuvre?
Or maybe I'm misunderstanding the question.

Rewrite This Story from SMASH?
Could you give a little more creative input on what you're looking for

Do you have clearance to use these songs? If not, some BWW poster gonna get you in trouble.

Is it really a big deal for a school to throw a few songs into a musical collaboration type thing. Do they even need permission for that?
I've been trying real hard to think of a song for you but.... ugh.... nothing's coming to me.
It Sucks to be Me from Avenue Q.
Or not. That might be for when you have no inspiration. At all.

I would "demonstrate" the restlessness of writers block. You would probably need to make a few lyric changes/cuts, but you might want to think about "It Needs Work" from City of Angels. (Think of the song as an internal monologue rather than speaking to someone.)

Yes, technically, you should obtain permission.

Die Vampire Die! from [Title of Show] could work?

Yeah. I suppose you must have permission but all that was asked was for suggestions. Whether they get permission or not after they have chosen the songs is not really relevant here
So? That's how conversations go, they twist and turn and become something else. That doesn't make it irrelevant.

the whole score of If/Then.
Sorry misread the thread title. If/Then just lacks inspiration and is not good.

Oh @dramamama611 I didn't mean irrelevant to the discussion. I just thought some people refused to give suggestions because they would be helping someone break the law.
I have no issue with discussing it though. I was just trying to say , hey, give suggestions and stop being so high and mighty ^^) well, to anyone who was doing that. I'm not assuming anyone was

There are several songs from RENT that would suggest such a thing.

How about "Heart and Music" from 'A New Brain"

"I Can" from BAJOUR
Morales's song "Nothing" from A Chorus Line.
"My Book" is a stand alone song by Jeff Blumenkratz that's all about a writer who can't think of anything to write about or motivate herself to start working. Audra Mcdonald sang it at one of her concerts (I actually think it was written for her). Also, about the rights thing, you don't need to worry about it. Seriously. Not a big deal. Actors don't request the rights for everything they perform at 54 below, or for their own personal concerts, and it's fine. As long as you bought the sheet music, you're good. Best of luck! :)
"Putting it Together" from Sunday in the Park with George?
