Place yah bets heeya!
Does anyone have any scuttlebutt?
I predict the odds are very good for at least one more extension, based on the theory that people like money.

Posted: 1/21/11 at 1:28pmThe show is consistently selling out. I think as long as they have a venue and actors, they'll extend again. I do wonder if they're (the producers) considering a Broadway transfer. The Signature is pretty small, and the show is in such high demand that they raised ticket prices by over 400%.

Sad though it be, I don't think they'd consider a Broadway transfer unless they could lock in a couple of moderate-to-big names. And even if they did that, I think still think they'd be looking down a barrel of sorts, given the recent faring of plays on Broadway that don't star Al Pacino (with, granted, a couple of exceptions). I suspect, though, if they extend one or two more times (provided the full replacement cast doesn't make a mess of the production, which they most likely will not) at Signature, they'll could have a couple more sold-out blocks. But I have no idea what's lined up for that space. after March 27th.

Apparently I'm the only one who's heard this: the producers have been looking at, and I'm pretty sure even secured, the Booth Theatre. It's the perfect size fit, excellent high traffic area, and small enough to suit the intimacy as well as keep the theatre full.
Plus, if they close March 27th, that's plenty of time to transfer the production with the replacement cast (though I heard Quinto is wanted to come back) and open for Tony eligibility.

HIGH starring Kathleen Turner is going into the Booth in late March.
EDIT- The Cort (as of 1/31) and Studio 54 (which I don't think Roundabout is going to rent out for that production) are the only theaters that are dark. The Golden is also free as of April 10 and while that is a tight window before the Tony cut-off date, it is still possible.

Noooooooooooooooooooo kidding?
That's the kind of scuttle-butt I was hoping for! <3
I bet Zach would come back if they give the show a workable closing date. In fact, it would be stupid of him not to.
EDIT: Oh, I did not realize that HIGH was opening so soon.

I don't see why they couldn't get Quinto back for a Bway transfer. He's one of my fav actors, so I try to keep up on his roles, and I don't think he has anything in the works right now except the Star Trek sequel, which last I checked, they are still writing. It's certainly not filming yet- maybe not even this year. I think I'd be hesitant to see it again without him and Zoe Kazan, who- in the entire very strong cast, were most certainly the standouts.
However, I wouldn't be opposed if Christian Borle 'couldn't commit' and was replaced by his fantastic and brilliant understudy whose name escapes me. I love Borle in musicals, but this role just didn't work for him.
ETA: I would LOVE it if they took Studio 54- I'm sure there would be a laugh at that line in Pt 2 where Louis mentions Roy as,"the most evil, twisted, vicious bastard ever to snort coke at Studio 54." heheh How times change.

Unless it transfers, it really needs to close. The company has a season lined up that must start eventually.
The Walter Kerr would've been a nice home, no?

I know a few people involved int the show and there's been talk of a transfer for a while. The person I trust the most thought it was wishful thinking when I last bugged him about it (maybe a month ago?), but some of the others keep bringing it up.
The one I trust the most made it quite clear that the cast changes were part of a money-saving measure as much as they were issues of actors' schedules. Cheaper actors, less demands, longer run. I think a Broadway transfer would need some names to sell out a bigger house consistently, but it all comes down to cost. Theater availability, specifically theaters that would be too large for the production, was another issue.

Posted: 1/21/11 at 9:00pmDidn't Brief Encounter play Studio 54? I'd have to believe AiA could be as/more successful that that. It has much more of a name outside of people who love semi-obscure British cinema. Although BE had a subscriber base as well. There is such a lack of plays this season. I'd have to believe it could do well in this environment and get some Tony recognition- especially for its cast members. Somebody page Al Pacino to reprise Roy Cohn and be the 'big name!'

Posted: 1/21/11 at 11:42pmThis should absolutely transfer to Broadway! My husband and I saw both parts last Saturday and both commented what a shame it was that more people wouldn't get to experience this marvelous, intense experience and that the production wouldn't be eligible for Tony recognition. And yes, Quinto and Zoe Kazan impressed the hell out of me...especially Kazan as Harper. WOW! I managed to get my picture taken with Christian Borle afterward, who I thought did a terrific job as Prior Walter. Until last Saturday, "Rent" had been my #1 most thrilling theatre experience. "Angels in America" now holds that place in my heart. I wish I lived closer to NY so I could go see both parts again, but I am thankful that I at least got to see them once. It was almost too much to take in at one time.

Posted: 1/21/11 at 11:44pmIsn't the play itself kind of a "celebrity" of its own? I don't know about non-theatre people, but most people I know who are either semi-interested in theatre or in the LGBTQ community know, love, and are fascinated with AiA.

Yeah, I really think it is. Even people I talk to who know little to nothing about theatre have at least heard of if not seen the HBO miniseries.
@ Chad - I agree that two parts in one day is an extraordinary experience! I did the marathon a month back and had such a fantastic time. I did go back and see Pt 2 through cancellation just so I could see Borle since his understudy was on that 1st go around. But yes, part of my want for them to transfer is selfish! I want to see it again!!
PS The backstage pics Sig just posted on their website are ah-dor-ah-ble.

For those who said they raised prices over 400%, that's technically untrue, as the initial run of tickets is subsidized by Time Warner.
Yes Theatertrash, they do have the rest of the season, but one show is at the Public, the other doesn't start at the Peter Norton Space until April.
