Native New Yorker, Anne of Green Gables was musicalized in the 60s and first done at the Charlottestown (PEI) Festival in Canada. It was remounted for a quite successful West End run in the late 60s. I think there were revivals of it in both cities as well.
American character actor and 2 time Tony winner Hiram Sherman was in the cast. I saw this show. Watchable and entertaining and not particularly taxing on the intellect as I recall. This was 35 years ago.
The only NY production was at City Center for a couple of weeks in the early 70s at some point, probably as a Christmas or Easter attraction.
There was a cast album which I still have somewhere. Don't know whether it was put on CD or not.
It might be published since it is perfect for community theatre. Check with the Drama Book Shop or French or other houses.

The Odysssey and The Illiad were both the basis for the sophisticated, witty and intelligent musical THE GOLDEN APPLE which opened in 1954 (immediately after THE THREEPENNY OPERA).
GOLDEN APPLE has music by Jerome Moross and lyrics by John Latouche.
I would love to see "Brideshead Revisited" made into a musical. It's my favorite book / TV series and it has everything you could possibly want in a show - flappers, soldiers, lavish sets and costumes, two men in love, a man and a woman in love, lots of great, intersesting characters, and lots of comedy and tragedy. I've already written a few songs in my head. Please someone make this into a show! I think Michelle Federer would be perfect as Julia, and then all we need is two good-looking guys to play Charles and Sebastian.

"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."
I was also thinking The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Do you think they could turn Shakespeare into a musical, excluding Kiss Me Kate with that one.
I would love to see them take a stab at that "Chicken Soup for the Soul." Now that's what I call a book. While it don't have no pictures, its got lots of words, pretty words that mean somethin' to me. If you can't make a pretty song outta that book then you ain't nothin but a chump.
I'd LOVE to see IT on stage. Horror is something we have to bring more of to Broadway.

I don't mean a remake of a Shakespeare play. I mean actually set it in the same time, same place, use iambic pintameter, or however you spell that. West Side Story isn't Romeo and Juliet, and if you hadn't noticed, the ending is different. Is it just me, or doesn't Juliet die??
The DID turn Shakespeare into a musical in the 70's. There were 2 rock-operas: Cressida (based on Troilus and Cressida) and Two Gentlemen of Verona which won the Tony for best musical. These were produced by Joseph Papp.
I would love to see The Great Gatsby turned into a musical. But Persuasion (by Jane Austen)would also be fantastic.
In the fall i saw a acting troop do a performance of a bunch of Poe's stories woven into one story line and it was excellent, it wasnt a musical - i dont kno if we are just talking about musicals now - but i still enjoyed it. There were some quirks about it that i would have liked to change but i am sure with the right person doing it, it could be great! I am pretty sure the name of it was "Murder by Poe"

Anne of Green Gables (the musical) has been a staple of the Charlotteown Festival on Prince Edward Island for several decades (I believe it was even commissioned by them.) There is an entire industry built around the book there, since that is in fact where it is set. It's quite a good musical.
