spring awakening is great, it does have comic relief. actually, you may want to see this because if it does well at the tony's, you'll probably kick yourself for not seeing it later.
This is a great suggestion, I saw Jersey Boys right after it opened, before the buzz and the Tony's and it sure made watching the Tony's very special.

Spring Awakening
The only reason I mentioned Spring Awakening was because the music seemed to suit someone around her age (college students). Even if he isn't a theatre guy, he may or may not like it.
I know the shows I listed are generally not the favorites of posters on this board (shows like Producers, Mamma Mia, etc.) but again, they might be shows your boyfriend would consider seeing since they are "fluff," and you would probably appreciate seeing anything.
Are you taking the Fung Wah/Grey Hound/Lucky Star? What's the earliest you can get there? Maybe if your lucky you can try Jersey Boys SRO.

My boyfriend is not a musical theater person either, but his top choices are:
Les Miz
Mary Poppins
thanks for all the suggestions!! I think I have it narrowed down to Avenue Q and Mary Poppins.. does anyone know what the prices for mary poppins are like? I'm tryin to go cheap/student rush.

Definitely Legally Blonde if you're going after April 3rd.
It's a wonderful, fun show!
If you are truly a character actress as your screen name implies you must see Grey Gardens. No question. Your boyfriend will just have to get over it. And who knows, he might even LIKE it.
If you've narrowed it down between Mary Poppins and Avenue Q I'd have to go with Avenue Q. I wasn't a huge fan of Mary Poppins (though I saw it in London, so there may be some differences, but the London show got better reviews I think). Avenue Q is a lot of fun and I bet your boyfriend would like it...most of my non-theatre friends actually enjoy a good number of the songs.
Characteress, you might have a difficult time getting cheap Mary Poppins tickets. The cheap $20 rear balcony seats are usually sold out; you have to buy them in advance. They might have normal priced tickets left...you really have to check with the box office. They might have SRO, I don't know.
Your better off going with something that is less popular and is more likely to have tickets available...Hairspray is a good example. I think it's usually on TKTS so you can buy them that way. You can also do the lotto 3 hrs before the show. I've heard it's a guarantee win almost, but I think it has gotten more popular. Hairspray always seems like a safe choice to take to someone who is not a musical theatre fan. I took my bf to see it and he loved it.
I totally agree. Wasn't going to be the first to say it, Sueleen. GG is awesome. (Here I go again.) It is worth seeing for Ms. E. (Make sure she's there.) who gives an outstanding performance. Maybe you could see that on your own and see something else with the BF. (Although, isn't this trip a present to you? You should see what you want to see and hope he is gracious enough to go along with it. Who knows? He may like it, too.)
But, Sueleen is dead on.

AVENUE Q, definitely. I took a bunch of non-theatre buff friends and they all loved it.
