Hey All,
My teacher has been doing plays and then selling them for the past 30 years. This is going to be the last production that I will be doing with him, and I would like to get him something special. Since it is his 30th year, I don't know what to exactly get him. I thought I could turn to you since you always are willing to help. He realy likes broadway, especially the musical Wicked.

I am sorry if my spelling is bad. Thank you to the people who answered the question, and did not make fun of the fact that I can't spell. I guess that some of the people are not as nice as I thought.

Please don't worry about the question, unless you have an answer. But in case you want to read the question with the correct spelling, I will do my best: My teacher is an amazing director and I want to get him something. This is his 30th play and the last production I will be doing with him. I just don't know what to get him, any advice is welcome.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 10:58pmWhat about one of those really nice Broadway books? The nice, hardcover ones, with bits about the history, different shows, and where Broadway is headed. I have briefly looked at Broadway:The American Musical, and that seemed pretty nice.

Frist of all I think that everyone needs to back off and leave this kid alone, so he messed up some, who gives a care, it is not like it is going to get him put i jail ok just back off, I know what it is like to made fun of and teased and it is not fun.
How would you guys who are making fun him fell if someone made fun of you in front of god and everybody? those of you who are doing need to cut it out, do you have any idea how rude it is and what it makes other people think of you?
Ok now to your question, like the idea of getting him broaday books and cd's you can never have to much broadway, well maybe you can.
Anyway good luck finding him something, I am sure that what ever it is he will like it.

Just something to keep in mind -- when a person writes in "IM-speak" on a non-IM board or other venue, he makes it much harder for other people to read what he's trying to say. It's about consideration for others. Comedyguy showed that he could write better when he tried (and thank you, comedyguy, for doing that to make it easier for everyone), so people were doing him a favor by pointing out that he needed to. Next time he'll know, and people will pay more attention to what he has to say instead of scratching their heads over it.

I second the Telecharge gift certificate, or else Broadway: The American musical (the book or the DVDs). Check for those two items on Amazon.com if you want more information. The book is beautiful and the DVDs are a treasure; they document the entire history of the Broadway musical from the very beginning until the modern day. the DVD feature clips from many classic shows as well as interviews with scores of actors, composers, directors, etc. Plus it's narrated by Julie Andrews, and what more could you ask for.

I don't think you need to spend tons of money to make this teacher feel appreciated. What about something from the heart? Like a scrapbook from past productions, and you can have people who were touched of affected by him write something to him that would be included in the book.
Another idea was to maybe talk to the Principle, Superintendent, head of PTA, etc and see about getting him a special citation. Eons ago we did this for an English teacher who shared the duties of the theatre department of my high school. We ended up convincing the powers that be to have a dinner/cabaret in her honor, and we were able to get students from a number of different graduating classes to participate.(like the end of Mr. Hollund's Opus) It would require a lot of work in a short amount of time, but it would be worth it.

Just a thought. Years ago I was in a similar situation. We all adored our director/mentor and wanted to do something special. At the close of the last performance, with permission from our set designer, we took a large piece from the set (in our case it was a car door, but something more practical can certainly be used :) ) and we all signed it with a personal message. He loved it.

Yes it needed to be pointed out but everyone did not have to jump in and pick on him, it was uncall for.
Disagree. The number of people who DID also illustrates the enormity of the problem.

Lighten up, he's just a kid. Geez.
What is this last play you're doing with him? You could make a shadowbox with memorabilia from it. (I did one for the Miracle Worker with an old photo of Helen and Annie, the cover of the script, a key, and a pair of antique dark glasses.) You can search on eBay for lots of neat things, even autographed Wicked items.
Someone else said this and it's true...nothing will mean more to this teacher than a letter thanking him and letting him know what he has meant to you. Believe me, that's the kind of thing teachers treasure. But let your mom proofread it before you give it to him.

Comedyguy, I think what you are doing is wonderful. Teachers are not only this country's greatest living asset (and so many people don't have the insight that you have to see that) but they are also the gateways for so many young people to find an interest that lasts a lifetime.
I think that first of all, your teacher would be so impressed with what you are doing here tonight. He would really be touched because you have recognized his passion and want to celebrate it. What your teacher has been trying to do (and it looks like he has succeeded) is to show you that everyone has a passion in their lives and that if they pursue it as he has, it can enrich their lives and the lives of those around them.
I am sure that there is a reporter at your local television station who would be interested in doing a story about your teacher, especially if you get a petition of signatures from fellow students saying that they also appreciate your wonderful teacher.
I'm sorry if a few people here were rude. Some of us can seem somewhat eccentric and testy at first, but I believe that deep down, they are nice people and when they take another look at what has been said here tonight, they will join me in congradulating you.
No matter if you do or don't like musical theater, you are always welcome here.
Good on you, Comedyguy.

Lizzie, BluCat, and others-
Stop being such jerks to this kid. He's new. Also, were you REALLY not able to understand what he was asking, or was it just that you were too lazy to interpret it? I hope it's the latter, cause if you weren't able to figure out the question, then perhaps you all are the unintelligent ones.
Signed with love.

"Disagree. The number of people who DID also illustrates the enormity of the problem."
Actually, all it did, lizzie, is demonstrate the meanspiritness of the board and the willingness of some of you to just "pile on" to the kid once the first nasty post appeared, as opposed to those who actually tried to answer the question, and the one who actually, rather patiently showed him how to post correctly.
"enormity of the problem?" Hyperbolic, much? Did the kid's post really ruin your day?
Another idea for your teacher. Write him a note, telling him how much he's helped/meant to you.
