What if Sutton Foster...?

...were to play Dolly Levi in a revival of Hello Dolly! I think that'd be awesome personally.

Thoughts?

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

Sutton has said that she only likes to create roles in new musicals, as opposed to revivals or replacing in long running shows.

Not to mention that she's too young for Dolly Levi.

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

If she said she only likes creating roles in new musicals and not in revivals, what role has she ever recreated in a revival? Maybe she should try it. Perhaps she will be old enough when Drowsy comes back, she can play the chaperone!

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

She hasn't. I believe specifically what she said is that at this point in her career, all she is interested in doing is creating roles in new musicals.

I take it she doesn't want to have the misfortune of being compared to predecessors.

She doesn't have to worry about fitting a mold. She can be the mold. ("Not the smelly mold! The mold." -Thanks, Heidi!)

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

On Broadway (very early in her career,) Foster has done two revivals: she played Sandy for a week in the 1990s GREASE revival and was A Star to Be in the ANNIE revival with Nell Carter in 1997.

Ever since appearing in the ensemble for THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, she has consistently (and consciously) appeared in all original musicals.

Though I think the time for her to be involved in a revival may be coming, her ability to originate such a consistent string of lead roles in new musicals over the past few years is extremely impressive.

Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

I'd love to see her take on some of the all-time great theatre roles in a couple years. Right now, however, she's at a great place in her career where she can originate roles back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back.

yes I kind of had a nightmare and Sutton was the only good part if that show

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

As Dolly Levi? No, but I would like to see her in a revival (Me and My Girl? No No Nannette?).
I also think she'd be a terrific Elphaba, but that comparison to the original thing kicks in here.
I also mentioned on another thread the possibility of pairing her with Mara Davi in Side Show, half kidding, but I think it would be really cool.

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

Personally, I think she could play a pretty good Ella Peterson in BELLS ARE RINGING, but that was just revived. She might be too old before it comes around again.

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

She'd make a fabulous Dolly in 10-15 years.

Annie Get Your Gun won't be on Broadway again anytime soon, but she'd be a fab Annie Oakley.

I'm still waiting for Bernadette Peters as Dolly...please?

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

I'd love to see that too, WickedRocks. Though I think Ms. Peters wants another original musical under her belt (part of why she's not in Pal Joey).

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

might I add that dg22894 once said that he (or she) would like to see a revival of Aida with

Sutton Foster... Amneris
Raul Esparza... Radames
Heather Headley... Aida

(I am not joking, you can search for it)

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

Sutton Foster is too young to play Dolly Levi? If I'm not mistaken she's now 33.

Barbra Streisand was 27 when she played Dolly in the movie.

HUH? Or maybe that was the point?

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

Didn't Jerry Herman say recently he wasn't crazy about Bernadette as Dolly? But he said he thinks Patti is a great idea for the role. It was an article where he discussed many different actresses who he felt could or could not play the role.

I don't think we'll see Bernadette as Dolly.

re: What if Sutton Foster...?

Wasn't Streissand 26 in the movie?

I would love to see Bette Midler play Dolly Levi!

And Bernadette Peters, but that'll never happen.
