For me, it's no contest: ON THE TOWN (1944)

Bouncy Bernstein score, bird's eye view of ENTIRE CITY (from loading docks to Art Museum to subways to Coney Island).

"NEW YORK, NEW YORK"

"Carried Away"

"I CAN COOK, TOO"

"Some Other Time"

Jerome Robbins Chereography. Great humor.

A WINNER !!! :)

Hi feinstein9, :)

WEST SIDE STORY does what many musicals set in NYC do NOT do--present the more realistic, gritty side of the city and is most definitely NOT a picture postcard to Manhattan! (Like SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING).

PS. I LOVE you quoting "Manhattan"! re: What is Your Favorite Musical That Took Place in New York?

Hi Marquise, :)

Yes, PROMISES, PROMISES gets a lot of mileage out of its NYC setting and the way people interact act with one another there.

Believe it or not, I saw a local production in Philadelphia years ago and they rewrote the whole show to take place in Philly!

Kind of a strange piece--it was kinda like watching GONE WITH THE WIND reset in Boston.

Hi Again Mllie... :)

You are right, part of 42ND STREET takes place in Philadelphia--but that's COOL, because that's my home town! re: What is Your Favorite Musical That Took Place in New York?

Pins and Needles was a revue, rather than a traditional book musical.

And yes, Oh, Kay! takes place in a ritzy New York townhouse.

Not sure if it was re-written for the film.

PS: opps, forgot this is about musicals.... DESK SET is not a musical. re: What is Your Favorite Musical That Took Place in New York?

Hi Glenn :)

PROMISES, PROMISES is an OUTSTANDING show. Too bad Bacharach & David found backstage politics not to their liking and vowed never to do another Broadway Show. Such a shame, "I'll Never Fall In Love Again" etc. Sometimes rumors of a PP film are heard, but so far, nothing imminet.

Glenn, PINS AND NEEDLES is a musical "revue" that has various sketches and songs--most of which are about New York or New York-related themes. One exception is the "Four Little Angels of Peace" number which is about America and Britain "looking the other way" when Hitler acquired Austria and Czechslovokia.

OH, KAY! takes place on Long Island (or should I say Lung Ayelund?) re: What is Your Favorite Musical That Took Place in New York?
