Hi nycdncr :)
Yes, SWEET CHARITY shows us many different sights of NYC.
What else can you say about a show where the first scene is set in Central Park and Charity FALLS into the lake? (Actually the orchestra pit, but she still comes out sopping wet!)

Hey Magruder, :)
I like you bringing up some lesser known works:
HAZEL FLAGG - "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York"
HOW NOW, DOW JONES - "Step to the Rear"
HAZEL FLAGG has a very interesting history. Hollywood purchased film rights, made it into a Martin & Lewis film (!) LIVING IT UP with Jerry Lewis playing HOMER Flagg.
Movie retained virtually entire score from stage show including "Boulevard" and "How Do You Speak To An Angel?" as well as Sheree North from original Broadway production.

Posted: 10/10/04 at 11:18amI think just four songs from Hazel Flagg made it into Living It Up. Caught the movie on TV once...it certainly is an odd affair.

Hi Bway Lover! :)
I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE--YES!!!
Wonderful source. Harold Rome score fit time and place precisely (although unfortunately no hit songs ever emerged from it--although "Too Soon" and "Who Knows?" probably deserve a second chance.) One of the first musicals with an anti-hero.
Elliott Gould (great acting job, but couldn't sing to save his life)
Lillian Roth's Comeback!!!
Ken LeRoy!
Bambi Linn!
And of course, the magnificent Broadway debut of:
B A R B A R A__S T R E I S A N D
Her number "Miss Marmelstein" is probably one of THE best show-stoppers in musical history.
Listening to it on OBC CD STILL cracks me up, no matter how many times I hear it:
"Parden me for the tough words I employ,
but I was an English major at CCNY."
I only wish I could travel back in time to 1962 and SEE her performance.
MAGNIFICENT STUFF!!!

I second that, Mary_Ethel - Great stuff! And, OH HOW I WISH I could have seen THAT performance... :)
I originally bought it JUST for Streisand....but have since learned to appreciate the entire score. It really is a funny show.
An interesting piece of trivia - did you know that Streisand later recorded "A funny thing happened on my way to love", Marilyn Cooper's big number in the show, for her Broadway Album - but then decided not to include it? I actually, umm, have that recording - it's so funny hearing her sing it. Much better than Cooper's version.

Hi magruder, :)
I agree, HELLO, DOLLY! and MAME are probably obvious choices.
I'm glad that posters are being more discerning though.

Hi B'waylover, :)
That IS interesting, especially because Streisand had some sort of falling out w/Harold Rome and POINT BLACK REFUSED to record ANY of his songs after I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE closed.
Per Rome, one day he decided to contact Streisand and beg ONE LAST TIME to send some songs over she might be interested in recording.
Phone Conversation:
Rome: "This is Harold Rome."
Streisand: [fake secretarial voice] "Harold WHO?"
Rome hung up!!!

LADY IN THE DARK
must definitely be on the list.
Liza: Where are we Beekman?
Beekman: Columbus Circle.
Liza: Would you get me my blue soapbox please?
I want to make a speach.
Liza:
There are many minds in circulation
Believing in reincarnation.
In me you see
One who doesn't agree.
Challenging possible affronts,
I believe I'll only live once,
And I want to make the most of it;
If there's a party, I want to be the host of it;
If there's a haunted house I want to be the ghost of it;
If I'm in town, I want to be the toast of it.
Songs include:
One Life to Live
This is New
The Sage of Jenny
Tschaikowsky
My Ship
