My vote goes the Madame Morrible in Wicked...everytime she comes on stage I lose focus because I cant stop thinking about how dumb her part is! And the little thing she sings before The Wizard and I should be cut! Harsh?...lol of course!

the cast of Bombay Dreams
"I wash my face, then drink beer, then I weep. Say a prayer and induce insincere self-abuse, till I'm fast asleep"- In Trousers
i couldn't understand a word of "a little bit of good"
IMO, the character of Mary Sunshine in CHICAGO accomplishes the following:
1) Demonstrates how the media interacts with the legal system to get "hot" (not necessarily "true") stories for public
2) Characterizes the 'sob sister' Newspaper Reporter that first appeared in the 1920s
3) Demonstrates that in the 1920s, women were finally being taken seriously enough to do a "man's job." (newspaper reporter)
Those of you who haven't seen production may not fully understand 3rd point. :)
I could argue Fiyero in Wicked.
Mary_Ethel, I see your point. I think the character is more of a boring on, yet serves its importance.

radames' dad (what was his boring name? something with a Z, i think...liZa?).
No need for him in the show at all...he adds some depth to a two dimensional Radames...but, thats it.
Joanne in Rent. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Joanne's probably my number two.
The only reason she's not #1 is because when performing RENT in your garage - Joanne's actually really fun.

i think madame morrible plays a very important role! but i don't want to give away any spoilers. *wink wink*. fiyero is the love interest, and is also an important part of the plot.

Fiyero can TOTTALLY be argued about. The spider in Jekyll is a little pointless to.

nessarose!!! thats outrageous! every character in that is so important! ESPECIALLY nessa! have you even seen the shoe? or the wizard of oz?
Good one Fosse!
nessa is VERY important... look at who she is! plus michelle does an AMAZING job in the role :P
What? Mary Sunshine is a very important part of Chicago. Yes, It's my least favorite lead in the show, and she gets my least favorite song in the score. But still Mary Sunshine plays an important part in the story.
And the Morrible, Personally I love the character. The best part of Morrible is CAROLE SHELLEY, The woman is amazing...absolutely loved her.
Mr. Mason in Jane Eyre
The Kid in Assassins
Squeegee dude in Rent
Well sure, the kid's not really important to the story, but the reason he's there is to be funny and to show how crazy Sara Jane Moore is (bringing your kid to an assassination).
Lol- I always forget that he did that. All I remember him as is "Hey Mr., Want a sip?" or whatever.

Hahahaha, the kid. Oh Eamon Foley...
And for everyone saying Madame Morrible, Dr. Dillamond makes the song "Something Bad" a pun.
BwayMatt - hahahaha, agree.

Joanne wasnt pointless. She was the character who supported Maureen and helped even out the # of guys and girls in the play. Plus it adds diversity. The character was Maureens lesbian lover so she was very important in portraying the role that Jonathan wanted her too. See Jonathan was inlove with this one chick who he was dating but she realized she was a lesbian and broke up with him for a woman and he met her in an awkward way so that is why Joanne is in the play because she represents that moment in time in jonathan's life..

I think you could argue boring for any number of characters, but to say that a character's not important is undermining the playwright. Very few playwrights put characters in just for ****s n giggles. I don't know that I'd call any character not important in their own way, even if it's for a millisecond. Like the kid in Assassins... It's a (fairly) historically accurate show. You could argue that he's superfluous in a couple of the scenes, but ya gotta give Moore a kid, cause she had one. All I'm saying is go easy on the playwright.

If you went back to read the posts, I clarified myself after Mary_Ethel made a good point.
