I remember seeing a very good stage production of ONE FLEW OVER THE COCKOOS NEST. Was that originally a play?
I think there are very good movies that could be turned into shows but one has to make sure they were not books first or stage shows to begin with....
The Pilots Wife (but that was a book and then a TV Movie) could be turned into a pretty good two woman play/musical
Maybe Moonstruck? That would be neat.

No one's mentioned one of my top choices " Princess Bride".

Dollypop, they made Dead Man Walking into an opera a couple years ago. I'm pretty sure it was performed somewhere around here in Southern California.

For the Boys is *kind of* a stage show...HAHA. This touring company tried to make it into one. It sucked. I was one of the Andrews Sisters and we did a tour Jan-May 2002 and it was horrifying. I'm sure if they worked on it, and took out the eight thousand drummers, it would've been ten times better.
They turned it into a big percussion show, and they actually did more of a revue than based on the movie. Actually, it wasn't much like the movie at all, I don't think...I never saw the movie...it was based on the Andrews Sisters and one of them was like, the lead, who fell in love with this guy in the army who she sang to. She sang "Every Road Leads Back to You" which I know Bette Midler sang in the movie...we did "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and stuff like that. Oh gosh, it was horrible.
There were nine actors playing drummers/soldiers...HAHAHA. Oh my gosh, I don't even want to know what the creator of this show was thinking. They would drum around and then there were nine dancers as well, and at one part they did a dance together. LOL. It was so ridiculous. Bad memories. Go away. The only characters in the show were the 3 Andrews Sisters, Tim (the army guy), and the Bob Hope type of host character...then the 18 Ensemble dancers/drummers.
Hopefully if they ever make a stage show, they'll steer far away from the production I did. One of our venues was a big arena and surprisingly enough, it sold out...the Nutter Center in Dayton Ohio. Hahaha, Nutter Center. They were all crazy, that's why they all saw it. Seriously, if any of you saw this show, you'd be crapping your pants and posting mean things about it on this message board. It was God-awful crap...although the talent was good and the drum numbers WERE pretty cool...they just didn't fit to well in this "musical."
I've always thought Aladdin would make an awesome stage show. Someone do it, NOW. That and maybe Center Stage? Ehh, I just love that movie. I keep getting good ideas, then I remember they're books and not movies. Hmm. Sixteen Candles!!! HAHA that would be the funniest musical ever. Long Duck Dong should get a solo.

HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE.
Although the story has been made into several films (including two musicals) it could be easily adapted for Broadway. Though some might want it left in the 1950s Monroe-Grable-Bacall era, it might work far better if updated to the present. With an all-new score.
And might be even MORE intersting if you made the three leads golddigging "boiz" - maybe a corn-fed blond, a hot latino, and an Asian twink.

I agree with the Princess Bride. That movie is hilarious. I also want to add Christy (which was only a made for TV movie). I don't think it would go over very well, but it is one of my favorite books.

Christy was actually a musical.
I knew the co-creator of the show.
It has not been able to be perfromed for a while now due to some issues with the original author.

About a year ago I was invited to a read/sing thru of a work in progress based on "Boys Don't Cry", it was the closest I've ever come to a "Springtime for Hitler" moment in all my years in the business.
You've got to spread joy up to the maximum
Bring gloom down to the minimum
Have faith or pandemonium's

CRY BABY is actually in the "talking stages" of heading for Broadway by the same creative team from HAIRSPRAY.
Also, interesting possibilities would be:
THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
BOY IN THE PLASTIC BUBBLE (TV Movie)
VALLEY OF THE DOLLS (TV Movie)
YENTL

I have always wondered why Yentl hadn't been a show yet. It is amazing. Love that movie. Nightmare Before Christmas would be very very very cool.

newyorkuniq, Streisand's Yentl is based on the play Yentl. It was on Broadway in 1976 and starred Tovah Feldshuh. It was great.

THE HOURS...starring Nicole Kidman! Hey, if she could do it in Moulin Rouge, why not Bway? She won't have to worry cuz Virginia Woolf has less screen time than the other gals.
