I'd like to see Gypsy done in a different language. Ditto to Wicked and DRS. Imagine a Dutch Avenue Q!
I wanna hear RENT in German.

Caroline, Or Change. Just because German or Porteugese R&B would be interesting.
Kimmy, RENT is fabulous in German
C,oC yes!
Nada pasa subterráneamente en Louisiana...
hmmm saw the other thread and it made me think of this... then this thread was started.
if Piazza was performed in Italy and translated, would the existing Italian parts be translated to English or another language...? how would they work that...
Elphaba, I concur. Rent is fabulous in German.
I tend to listen to my Dutch Cast Recording of Miss Saigon more than any other version.
Les Miserables tends to be in multiple languages prior to English in my rotation.
Let me see - I'd have to pick something with a nice mellow score that flows since it must be sang in Portuguese - I just cannot think of which show, Perhaps Hedwig done in Portuguese.

Gypsy was actually done in spanish in Mexico, I believe there is a cast recording.
I would LOVE to see Into The Woods in another language, just to see if they can pull off the translation.
To add to the discussion, are there musicals you feel would have parts (and impact) of their songs and dialogue changed if they were translated into another language?

I find "Starlight Express" to be a superior show in German.
I have enjoyed "Mamma Mia" and "The Sound of Music" in Dutch.
"Chicago" is brilliant in Spanish. "We Will Rock You" was hilarious in Spanish.
I have heard "Rent" in Spanish, German, Italian and Icelandic. For a show I have always said I don't like I tend to weirdly like the foreign languages.
Wow, Icelandic "Rent"?!
SirLiir, good question. I suppose the obvious answer would be "Cats", since T.S. Elliot's lyricism would probably be lost in any other language. (And some people may say that's a good thing. )

I wonder what Fiddler sounds like in Yiddish, or Hebrew even?
How about Pacific Overtures in Japanese?
I saw Les Miz in Hebrew in Tel Aviv a few years ago (2000), it was a lot of fun since I already knew all the words and the rest was the exact same except the language. (and I understood most of it anyway since I speak Hebrew)
I got really into Hebrew a few years ago, so I would love to hear any in Hebrew. (And if ancient languages are in consideration, maybe Akkadian, Ugaritic, or Aramaic :) )
HI people. (first post here)
as i speak Hebrew and know practically the entire score of LesMis in Hebrew (and English) by heart-
i thought it would be funny to hear your response to an excerpt.
so here are a few written lines from "I dreamed a dream"-
of course they're supposed to be written in hebrew letters....
"CH"-marks a sound like in loCH ness
chalom chalamti li mizman (i dreamed a dream in time gone by)
Pisgat chayai kmo or zore-ach (when hope .... worth living)
chalamti ahava bli dai (i dreamed that.....die)
chalamti elohim sole-ach (i dreamed.... forgiving)
hayiti tseira meod (the i was young...afraid)
im chalomot shel yesh meayin (and dreams were...wasted)
olam shatuf be-or varod (there was no...paid)
zimarti shir, lagamti yayin (no song unsung...tasted)
(i'm tired of writing the english equivilent- so you'll have to get by)
ach balayla nemerim
bekolam galgal hara'am
vekor'im hem ligzarim
chalomot michut zahaaaaaaaav
(translated by the late: Ehud Manor)
--that's all for now. i also have the hebrew versions of MY FAIR LADY, KING AND I, IRMA LA DOUCE, And probably a few more.

What's the literal translation? And do you have it in Hebrew writing?
I actually like the show in Hebrew.
The avatar is freaky BsO. Speaking of which, I wonder how Wicked would sound in Klingon?
---watches as people say, "Better"
Can you say "Listen Nessa, Uh Nessa, I have something to confess a...reason why" in Klingon?
I'd like to hear Nine totally in Italian.

Elphaba & Patronus - are you crazy? ( No disrespect here....lol) Have you heard RENT in German? I looked up the lyrics the other day and it's probably one of THE worst translations ever.

It's not the actual translation they are talking about, but the way it sounds. It actually sounds quite nice, IMO.
tis muah! tis MUAAAAAAHHH!! (Wicked)
i have the complete libretto in hebrew writing but i can't really print it. you probably don't have hebrew font installed on your system.
i will try to literaly translate the HEBREW translation of "i dreamed a dream"- and see how it goes:
i dreamed a dream in time gone by
the peak of my life like a shining light
i dreamed of an endless love
i dreamed about a forgiving god
i was very young
with dreams that come out of emptiness
the world was colored with pink light
i sang a song, i drank wine
but at night the tigers
in their voice, the roll of thunder
and they tear to shreads
dreams woven with golden thread
he sat the summer by my side
my life had purpuse then
and he picked (as in -to pick from a tree) my childhood
but he was gone when autumn came
but one of these days
i dreamt that we shall be together again
but dreams tend to fail you
and your heart tends to surrender to fear
i had a dream about a life
so different from the depths of torture
a different life called out my name
now life murdered my dream
any other song you'd like?
