"The Pillowman," hands down, easy. And "Titus Andronicus" ain't too musical, either.
"Titus Andronicus" could at least have one good song: "Gimme a Hand"!

Anything Shakespeare...it just would not be the same =[
Shakespeare has been successfully transposed to musical theatre, and quite well:
West Side Story (Romeo and Juliet)
Kiss Me Kate (The Taming of the Shrew)
Your Own Thing (Twelth Night)
Two Gentlemen of Verona (Two Gentlemen...)
The Boys From Syracuse (The Comedy of Errors)
Return to the Forbidden Planet (The Tempest)
The Lion King (Hamlet)
Starlight Express (Othello)
Let's not include STARLIGHT EXPRESS as an example of successful Shakespeare-inspired musicals, it hurts the cause.
I was going to mention WEST SIDE STORY and KISS ME KATE as prime examples of Shakespeare being the inspiration for incredibly well-crafted musicals (especially on the case of WEST SIDE)

The Pillowman was actually my first thought upon seeing this thread... as much as I love the "dark" shows, it's just too twisted to make it as a musical. And too long. It's three hours and change as it is, let's not add musical numbers. (Although I'd love to see someone actually adapt "The Little Green Pig" to song form.)
In addition, every musical I've seen of The Importance of Being Earnest has been dreadful.
bwaybabe2 you got it! =)
Chevstriss – you listed Bent as a play that shouldn’t be musicalized? I think it could be made into a very good musical if done right. It would be kind of a cross between Kiss of the Spiderwoman and Cabaret. It would defiantly be dark, not your typical musical comedy fare, but there are plenty of moments that would make for great numbers. The more I think about it the better musical I think it could be. I’d love to see it.

Waiting for Godot.
The Miracle Worker - "The Braille Ballet" - I think not.
Mungo, I was just about to add "Waiting For Godot" but let me add a critical comment on "Godot, The Musical (at The Gershwin):
The dance numbers just sit there....

my favorit scene:
from the musical "Oh, Streetcar!" featuring Apu as Steve)
Apu:
I am just a simple paperboy,
No romance do I seek.
I just wanted forty cents,
For my deliveries last week.
Will this bewitching floozy,
Seduce this humble newsie?
Oh, what's a paperboy to...
Do
"The Boys Next Door". If it was a light hearted musical, then it wold completely miss the point and if it was one of those more serious musicals, then it would be way too depressing.
