Now that St. James is the confirmed home of Disney's Frozen (and will attract zillions of tourists for the foreseeable future), what will become of the former Angus space right next door? I would say this real estate just got a lot more valuable.

It may be used to expand the theater for Frozen. I was wondering what will happen to the old Ruby Foo's space.

That was my first thought too, but then I found this re: the Helen Hayes renovation plans:

Looks like the expansion of the St. James (that Riedel also touches on) is on the East-facing side of the St. James, so would not affect it's westerly neighbor (former Angus).

Not much room on the other side with Sardi's there. What else could be on the chopping block?

What about the Polish Tea Room? They were supposed to be looking for a place in the Theater District

Its old space in the Hotel Edison is still empty. Wonder if the deal fell thru

When did Angus close and why? Were Brodrick and Lane still associated?

It closed awhile ago. If I had to take a guess, they were probably done in by that old bugaboo - escalating rents. The rents are like the grim reaper destroying everything in its path

Rents! The first thing that came to mind. There is an Art shop that is a stones throw from the DIner on W 57th kind of by Carnegie Hall called Lees or something like that and it is closing its doors. It was one of a kind and I am sure it was swallowed by a greedy landlord.

All I can say is: Barrymores, McHales, The Polish Tea Room, Ted Hooks Backstage. The end of an era. Sob.

Make sure you support the places that are still around- those places closed, yes because of the rent, but mainly because people weren't patronizing those spots!

I have not had a single great soup since Cafe Edison closed. And forget about finding decent matzah brei or blintzes in the area. Not a tragedy, no, but a quality-of-life loss.

I'm next door in the Something Rotten rush line at the moment and the doors are receiving a fresh coat of paint. There were still tables and chairs inside and I believe I noticed scaffolding.

In re Cafe Edison, Freidman's Comfort Food is supposed to go in that space, and Bond 45 is supposed to go in the old Sofia's space, on two floors. The landlord spun incredible lies when evicting the Strohls. "We needed the space for a restaurant featuring a celebrity chef..." NOT.
All I can say is I won't spend one more dime in anything that hotel, ever again, including the Rum House, a once-convenient dive bar.

Saw the renovations for new Bond 45 building. The Edison bathroom is convenient to use and clean if anyone is interested. The old Bonds building looks ripe for redevelopment and I would not be surprised if that was next to face the wrecking ball. God did that parcel of land have history which,as we all know, means nothing in NY

rent is always a factor but the restaurant business is a lot like the theatre in that rent is mostly a pretext. The truth is that, whereas theatre people went to Angus when it opened, and the 3rd floor was a "scene" for a while, he was not able to sustain what Joe Allen has, and it largely devolved into a tourist place that had nothing to distinguish itself. There are still plenty of hangouts, even some east of 8th.

Rumor is that Junior's is taking the old Ruby Foo's space... but for what????? They have a restaurant just 3 blocks away.... I know they recently lost their grand central lease, but they wouldn't open another junior's just a few blocks away would they????

Sort of like reviving Glass Menagerie after only 3 years. This is another bad idea.

And that huge Toys R Us is becoming a Gap? Surely a GAP can fill that entire store? Don't they have a Gap on 42nd street anyway.

Read my post #16. Land parcel is to big and costly for it not to be developed. If I were to bet, I believe the entire parcel will go from the old Bond Store to the old Toys R Us location and everything in between.
