"New Ways to Dream"
...
Well, okay, I've only heard the score twice.
basically everyone could post a different song, but mine is for sure "As If We Never Said Goodbye" definitely with Elaine Paige, thank you, Jimmcf. it's on her encore CD. not that I don't love Glenn Close. Gelnn's is very emotional, but Elaine Paige is Elaine Paige. enough said.
i know everyone will attack me....but i prefer glenn's voice over elaine's. overall patti lupone is the best singer though.

I love many of the songs - but I do find the duet TOO MUCH IN LOVE TO CARE achingly romantic and lyrical ( if sung by Michael Ball and Emma Williams from the concert version or, if not, if sung by Hugh Jackman and his co-star from the Aussie production).

Jo, Hugh's co-star was the stunning Debra Byrne. So much love for her, except on the Aussie Cats Soundtrack, then I hate her...
Favourite song? Max's reprise of New Ways to Dream, As sung by George Hearn...I know its just exposition but I love it.

The entire scene beginning with Norma's phone call to Betty leading upto Betty's arrival at Norma's house and Joe singing to Norma and Betty his big angry SUNSET BOULEVARD rendition, into the point where Norma shoots Joe and into the end. Of course, the World Premiere recording, in London, with none other than Patti Lupone and Kevin Anderson (Yep, that guy from Brooklyn. He was the original Joe, and he was amazing, and he looked a heck of a lot better back then, but that's besides the point.) Sunset was murdered between London and Broadway.

Let me preface this by saying that I haven't personally SEEN the show, but am very attached to the Los Angeles recording with Glenn Close, but I think I'd have to say either "With One Look" or the title song. I think each kind of sums up each character, and how they view things in life.

I was referring to the actress who played Betty Schaefer,Ozbwayfan
I have seen the Australian TV documentary on SUNSET BOULEVARD ( and The Palace of Dreams) and there was one scene where Hugh is rehearsing the song TOO MUCH IN LOVE TO CARE with the actress who sang Betty's part - it was great and Hugh's voice was definitely soaring!
Debra seems like an excellent Norma ( I have only seen Betty Buckley and Elaine Paige in the role, although I have also seen Glenn singing the two famous Norma songs in the ALW Celebration video), based on the scenes from the show in the documentary. Did you see the show in Australia? What a pity that it was never recorded!
I do have Debra Byrne's NEW WAYS TO DREAM where she sings the album title song ( which came from Sunset Boulevard) and where she sings a gorgeous duet with Hugh of Stephen Sondheim's No One is Alone/ Children will Listen.

No matter who sings it, I really enjoy "Surrender" after Norma's entrance!
As If We Never Said Goodbye
(I do however, love Michael Ball's version of the title song.)
Probably, "As If We Never Said Goodbye"--Betty Buckley's version is my fave.
i saw Betty in the show....and i just can't stand her voice or her singing. She was awful.
With One Look
As If We Never Said Goodbye
Typical, I know, but those ARE the best songs...
Glenn did a great job with "surrender"
THE PERFECT YEAR. Loved Elaine Paige in the role...and still love her version of this song on "Encores." I wish there were cast recording with her singing Norma.

I like "The Ladies Paying"
My fave in the show is "The Perfect Year" starting with the beginning of the "Party", Norma's entrance into the Tango and up to Joe leaving and "By this time next Year" into the close of act 1 - Love the split level set effect and when the mansion rises it is just way too cool!! Norma is wearing the most beautiful gown in that scene too, It was all borealis crystals and must have weighed a TON! LuPone & Anderson were the BEST couple to star, Second was Paige & Anderson, Didn't care for Close (Someone must have told her it was a silent film!) and I wish Dunaway would have been allowed to go on. Dianne Carroll was great on the CD but I didn't see her in person, I wish I had and Linda Balgord was okay in the tour though her voice a tad too opera-ish for this Norma, Ron Bohemer was a great male lead as well. Too bad a lot of people poo poo'd this show, I enjoy it very much!
My favorite are:
Let's Have Lunch
Surrender
With One Look
The Greatest Star of All
Every Movie's a Circus
New Ways to Dream
As If We Never Said Goodbye
Surrender (Cecil B. DeMille's Reprise)
New Ways to Dream (Max's Reprise)
The Greatest Star of All (Max's and Norma's Reprise in the Final Scene)
Surrender (Norma's reprise in the Final Scene)
I only have the L.A. album, so I'll say that currently my favorite Norma is Glenn Close, and I'll die if George Hearn doesn't play Max in the movie.
And I'll add that brief version of Sunset Boulevard Norma sings between Surrender and With One Look.
