I have never seen the show and have only heard a couple songs from it...the ones where Eden Espinosa hits those ridiculous notes in a ridiculous way which sometimes makes me want to hit someone...but I digress...
Anyways, all I hear is bad things about it and I was just curious as to why it is so bad. It also doesn't seem like it's going to tour, which from the sounds I hear isn't a bad thing. Again, I'm just curious....not trying to start a fight.
If you like Musicals with a stupid plot, and an American Idol sing off at the end, see Brooklyn.
I didn't think Eden was horrible on that one clip I saw..
In a way I want to see it...to see what all the fuss is about...

I haven't heard too many things lately about it here. Try the Board search.

that's so weird because I've always dreamt of seeing a musical with a stupid plot, complete with an American idol style sing off at the end...
And Eden isn't a bad singer at all, she just has a weird technique...I ain't playa hatin'!
I think eden is a great singer, and not ALL of the songs are bad. BUt some of them bother me.

That's so funny you should ask cause we just had a thread 2 days ago called "What's Up With Brooklyn" that asked the same questions.
Can't you people get a life?

I think you need to get a life right there with us, dude. Does not using the search feature mean you do not have a life?
Maybe it is because I am younger, but a wonderful, thought-provoking plot is not in every musical. I go to the theatre with a completely open-mind.

And, apparently, (all together now!), "Lowered Expectaaaaaaaations!"

Now, how come when I was typing that, I knew you would respond saying the exact thing you just said?

Because it's the only appropriate response after what you wrote?

You are one smart son of a bit....
How the heck did ya know?
The question is, should I see it from an I'm-attending-the-Tony's-again-this-year-and-want-to-have-seen-almost-all-the-shows-that-are-eligible point of view?

yeah I know...
I just figured EVERYONE ELSE asks that question...and I ALWAYS yell at them...meh.

Well, if your only reason to see Brooklyn is for the role it might play in this year's Tonys, you can pretty much skip it without any worry on that score.
true, MArgo...very true

if ANYTHING it'll probably only get a nom for best costumes... perhaps ramona keller might get a nod, but i highly doubt it will have any effect on the race this season... but if you have 20 bucks go get some rush, they sure aren't selling out.
Brooklyn is what it is. I thoroughly enjoyed the show. It's not in my Top 100 Musicals of all time, but I definitely enjoyed it. It doesn't deserve to be pre- judged. Many people hate it with a passion, because they find it to be mindless. This is a valid opinion. I personally happen to think that Brooklyn is a touching, simple story comparable to The Fantasticks in storytelling style with hints of other musical inspirations as well. While the lyrics are insipid at times, this is the intention... The form adheres to the story! It is street people telling a story, and in order to make that pretense realistic, the story/ lyrics must be a bit cliched/ obvious. I found every performance wonderful, especially Cleavant Derricks. The cast was extremely committed to the material, which I think is wonderful, considering the beating it has gotten.
The student tickets are great- always right in front, which is especially excellent at the Plymouth, where the side views are a 10. Brooklyn is definitely worth seeing, if only to form your OWN opinion. I'm glad I did, instead of judging the show simply by the score. A show CANNOT be judged by only a score. And in this case, I think the score has at least SOME merit, which is easier to see upon actually viewing the show.
