I'm looking over some of these choices and thinking to myself, "Wow. These are theatre people??"
Which choices make you think that, SeanMartin? And is it because you personally like the songs or you just find them to be extremely well-crafted?
"Please Hello", just as an example. It's a brilliantly written song. It fulfills a key point in the story. It's hysterical on stage. How could anyone *not* like it? Seriously, now.

"Carousel-Highest Judge of All. Completely stops the show in its tracks and doesn't have any arch in it. It's a song that could be covered in one line."
I believe that "Highest Judge of All" was a Set Switch song. When the show was original performed, they didn't have the technology to change the set in the length of time it took to read one line so the performer(s) would sing the song in front of the curtain while the set was being changed behind it. Granted, they could have come up with something better, but that is why they didn't cover it in "one line".
You're correct. It's also called an in-one number, because it would be performed before the "number one" drop.
Jesus Christ Superstar- "Peter's Denial"
South Pacific- "Happy Talk"
The Book of Mormon- "Man Up"
Follies- "Ah, Paris!" (I do like it but just not as much as the other songs)
I still like Highesat Judge of All (it's interesting that it made the cast album when so much was cut due to length)--cerainly it's better than other "in one" songs from R&H like It's a Scandal and Western People Funny...
Of course I also love Till Good Luck Comes my Way--an "in one" song from Show Boat often cut.
GYPSY is my favourite show. I don't think any song in the score is expendable and I love all of them. So when I pick "All I Need is the Girl", please don't think that I don't like the song or think that it doesn't work dramatically or theatrically or that I think it should be replaced. I think it is a great song and does what it needs to. Ditto "Mr. Goldstone, I Love You", the criticism of which I've read earlier in this thread I find unconvincing. It's just, by a hair's breadth, my least favourite song in a score full of really great songs.
Even Sondheim hated "Goldstone".
I know I'll get flamed for this, but I really don't like The Road You Didn't Take.

(a) Even Sondheim isn't infallible.
(b) Even Sondheim, despite being frustrated by the thinness of the list he created, realised the necessity of "Mr. Goldstone" and that it worked as he, Styne, Laurents and Robbins hoped it would in setting up "Little Lamb".

"There's a little bit of good in everyone" from Chicago. I hate that song, hate Mary Sunshine, don't understand the point of her in the show. She doesn't move along the story, she's just there for shock value.

"I Am Here for You" from The Book of Mormon - Not so much the song's fault as the fact that I often find Josh Gad's voice grating
"Little People" from Les Mis
"Let's Walk" from The Light in the Piazza - Sorry! I like it within the context of the show, I just don't really enjoy listening to it.
Zoser's songs from Aida, haha
"If I Had a Fine White Horse" from The Secret Garden
"Big News," "How Can I Call This Home," and "I Am Trying to Remember" from Parade
I'm trying to think of one from my ultimate favorite show, Miss Saigon, and I don't know if I can.
One More Kiss from Follies
I don't' care who sings it.. I hate that song.
