What show (or performer) inspired you to become a theater artist?

That is the question I posed to more than a dozen theater award nominees yesterday.
For Keith Carradine, it was seeing "Hair" at age 19, for Andrea Martin, it was seeing Chita Rivera at age 12 ( "'I thought: Here’s a spunky ethnic woman….Maybe I have a chance'”); for Jay Armstrong Johnson it was "Disney on Ice" at age 4.
How about you? What was the show that made you become a theater artist -- or a lifelong theatergoer?

(title of show)...honestly inspired me to write my first book, now published about a life in the theatre, and recovery. Their Now. Here. This. gave me the balls to reply to Andrea Martin last week and now I sang on Pippin!

A Chorus Line, the original cast made me re-appraise my life!

For me it was probably a combination of the OBC album of MAME with the Patrick Dennis book and the Rosalind Russell movie. The town where I grew up didn't have a professional theater until I was a teenager and I didn't finally see MAME on stage until Angela did a tour in the 1970s (i.e., my early 20s).

It was being involved with a children's theatre group that performed The Magic Pebble back when I was nine. As for professional productions, probably countless times seeing The Nutcracker.

However, the first performance I saw that made me want to pursue theatre as a career was in an Intro to Theatre course I was taking as an elective. It was a clip of the 2006 revival of Company's "Not Getting Married Today." I was hooked.

I grew up acting but never knew that theater could be a career until I met Kevin Gray who was touring with Phantom when I was in high school. He always said to "dream your dreams and believe" and was encouraging about getting training and studying acting in college. I'm so happy that I met him as even if I don't make the big bucks at this, I am a working actor because of his encouragement.
