What show is closing next?? — Page 2

Well, Mammia Mia was hardly a high water mark in the history of the musical artform when it opened three years ago, but it's been a soldout hit nearly every week since then. I'm no fan of jukebox musicals, but apparently there are masses of people out there are that have no problem dropping $101 for a poorly written, cheaply designed, nonsensical evening of ABBA karaoke, so I have no idea why equally mediocre karaoke shows featuring music by Elvis and The Beach Boys won't be similarly popular with the tourist crowds. If it was about quality and innovation and not insulting the intelligence of your audience, then I'd say those shows were doomed. Fortunate for GV and ASU (and unfortunate for the future of the genre) there seems to be an massive audience for mindless, poorly constructed drivel featuring golden oldies for people to get up and dance to, so who knows, they may run for years.

Perhaps they could come up with a new Tony category -- "Best Theme Park Show Masquerading As A Real Broadway Musical."

I think WICKED could go either way... it could keep going for years.
On the other hand, after Idina and Joey leave, and then after JLT and Shoshana and Michelle and Christopher leave, people might stop coming. You never know.
And also, when ARE Michelle and Christopher (and Carole and George and whomever) leaving? Anyone know?
What other shows have recently given closing notices?
And I wouldn't be surprised if BKLYN closes in 6 months or less.

As much as you hate to hear it, the star of Wicked is Wicked.

Most people who go couldn't tell you Idina Menzel from Joanna Gleason.

the supporting actors of wicked are leaving sometime in april... don't remember the exact date.


wicked will continue. MANY shows prior have had beloved actors performing the parts of beloved characters, and after they left, the show moved forward.

one example is RENT. i AM NOT turning this into a stunt cast bashing. however, think about the staples of that show - adam pascal, anthony rapp, and (gasp) idina menzel. these actors are often synonymous with their character. (i know i myself sometimes call "roger" "adam" accidentally) yet, after these actors left, the show continued. for 8 years, and it's still going. so the actors do not always necessarily make the show.

I have to agree with SticktoPriest. Wicked's staying on Broadway not because of the performers, but the show is just a spectacle.

I do, however, agree to Beka's statement, "MANY shows prior have had beloved actors performing the parts of beloved characters, and after they left, the show moved forward." True, but Rent is something else...where we fell in love with ALL of the characters. Wicked...sorry, but we just fall in love with two.

I believe that once all the bad reviews for Good Vibrations are posted on January 28 it will close by march.
