What shows are Pulitzer eligible?

I'm guessing this will be a "No Award" year, but we'll see.

I was going to say the same thing, Margo.

There is no way in hell that SPRING AWAKENING, GREY GARDENS, or RABBIT HOLE will win the Pulitzer.

If CRIMES OF THE HEART can win a Pulitzer, anything can.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

CRIMES OF THE HEART is original. SPRING AWAKENING and GREY GARDENS are not - which don't help their chances.

And CRIMES OF THE HEART is a lot better than people often give it credit for.

ANNA IN THE TROPICS won the Pulitzer before it came to Broadway (where it failed). What an awful show. THAT won the Pulitzer over TAKE ME OUT.

As I suggested in late November, I maintain that SPRING AWAKENING will win the Pulitzer for Drama.

In the defense of ANNA IN THE TROPICS, it reads much better than it plays. However, OUR LADY OF 121st STREET was better than TAKE ME OUT and ANNA, and should have won IMO.

CRIMES OF THE HEART may be original, but I still don't think it's good. I've seen and read it. It's a glorified Lifetime movie of the week.

It's true that anything's possible. This just seems like a particularly weak year for new American work. RABBIT HOLE had a very mixed critical reception, with many critics comparing it to a Lifetime movie of the week. The book of SPRING AWAKENING adheres so closely to the Wedekind play that I wonder whether the jury will find it "original" enough or "American" enough to qualify (though similarly faithful works have won in the past). The critical acclaim for GREY GARDENS was as much for Ebersole's lead performance as for the musical itself (which received some less than enthusiastic notices along with some raves).

DURANGO is an interesting work and it probably helps its chances that no work by an Asian-American playwright has ever won before. I just wonder if there was enough "buzz" surrounding the play for it to be remembered by the committee (its reviews were solid, but hardly raves and its run at the Public seemed to come and go with little fanfare).

Similarly THE PAIN & THE ITCH didn't really get the sort of raves that normally follow Pulitzer Prize winning candidates (though it certainly received some positive notices). Personally, I thought it was the strongest American play I saw last year, but I'm not sure how many would agree with me.

There just isn't a major standout this year, which leads me to guess that "No Award" will be given, but, you can never be sure of anything with the Pulitzer jury.

There was nothing Pulitzer worthy about TAKE ME OUT. ANNA IN THE TROPICS was fantastic.

What I felt was so relevant about TAKE ME OUT was the observations it makes on Major League Baseball, an American pop-culture staple. I thought it fit the bill to a T. That is if we're going by the qualifications for the Pulitzer.

You could make the same case for ANNA, vis-a-vis immigration.

To address Margo's qualification that SPRING AWAKENING adheres too closely to the original Wedekind text, I'd argue that the layered insights into character and narrative through the music and songs are enormous, fundamentally changing and enhacing the original story. Without the music and songs, I agree, the substance of the "book" is more than a century old. What Sater and Sheik have fashioned in their work is a significantly new construction that deserves recognition and honors.

I didn't get much layered anything from SPRING AWAKENING...

Given that last year was a "no award" year, I wonder how much pressure there is on the Committee to just give the award to SOMETHING this year. According to Wikipedia, the last time there was no award for 2 consecutive years was 1963-64.

Bump

Curious what we think the finalists and winner will be or if it will indeed be a second NO AWARD year.

I think I'd add Keith Bunin's THE BUSY WORLD IS HUSHED and Chris Shinn's DYING CITY to my earlier list of possible contenders -- though I'm still thinking that this could very well be another NO AWARD year.

I haven't read or seen Radio Golf yet--is it a possibility? With all respect, is it possible that if it's a good play, it could be awarded to Mr. Wilson as a fond farewell?

Hasn't RADIO GOLF already been eligible? It's had major regional productions as far back as early 2005.

Wilson already has 2 Pulitzers...I know NOTHING about RADIO GOLF, but I wouldn't count on sentimentality coming into play here.

Margo: Yes, RADIO GOLF was eligible before, but apparantly they have submitted an updated script. It's supposedly updated enough to quality for reconsideration.

I also wonder if INDIAN INK might also have a shot as a kind of "career award" for Gurney (who's been around forever and a finalist before, but never won). I generally find his work sorta blah, but he could sneak in there as a way to honor his body of work (like they did with another playwright I find blah, Donald Margulies when they awarded his DINNER WITH FRIENDS).

Agreed. There are a few possibilities here, but I seriously think everything is pointing in the direction of another "No Award" year.

Every potential play has a "Yah, but..." quality to it.
